Day 1
Istanbul

Sunday 19 April 2015. Welcome to Istanbul! After being met at the airport you will be transferred to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day at leisure. Tonight a welcome meeting takes place where you'll meet your guide and the rest of the group.
If you've arrived early you may wish to join our 'Backstreets Tour', further details relating to the excursion can be found in our trip notes.

Day 2
Istanbul City Tour

Today we take in some of the Istanbul's best landmarks including the iconic Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia (exterior only), Topkapi Palace and the Hippodrome of Constantinople - an old sporting and social centre. Later we explore the Roman underground cistern, covered with glistening spot lights and full of intricately carved columns. After a break for lunch we'll take a relaxing cruise along the Bosphorus before visiting the lively and colourful Egyptian Spice Market and Grand Bazaar, where you will be able to test your haggling skills.

Day 3
Pamukkale

Istanbul - Pamukkale. This morning we say goodbye to Istanbul and travel south to Pamukkale. On the way we stop for an informative visit to a Turkish carpet weaving and manufacturing house. Carpets are one of Turkey's most beautiful exports, generally woven by women, they learn the trade at quite a young age and can take months or even years to finish some of these masterpieces.

Day 4
Ancient Ephesus

Pamukkale - Kusadasi. Pamukkale is one of Turkey’s finest natural wonders, home of the famous gleaming white calcium terraced pools, known locally as the Cotton Castles. Walk barefoot along the travertine pools and explore the ruins of Hierapolis, an old Roman spa town.

From Pamukkale, we travel on to Ephesus, regarded as one of the best preserved classical cities in the Western Med. Highlights of our guided tour of this incredible site, include the famous Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre. En route to coastal Kusadasi, we visit a high grade leather garment house.

Day 5
Roman Pergamum

Kusadasi - Edremit. This morning we travel north to Edremit, stopping en route at the Roman ruins of Pergamum, which was once the capital city of the Asian province of the ancient Roman Empire. Home to one of the steepest, vertigo-inducing amphitheatres in the classical world, Pergamum was also famous for its Asclepion (medical centre).

Day 6
ANZAC Eve at Gallipoli

Edremit - Gallipoli. We make an early start this morning, for our journey to Gallipoli, stopping en route to visit the famous Trojan wooden horse of Troy. Next we jump aboard the ferry and cross to the Gallipoli Peninsular where we enjoy a delicious Turkish BBQ to commemorate ANZAC Eve. Wrap up warm and pick yourself a great spot for the evening as we settle down for the night at the atmospheric ANZAC Eve vigil.

Day 7
ANZAC Day

Gallipoli - Istanbul. First light heralds the Dawn Service, then you’ll have plenty of time to independently explore the many trenches and memorial sites as you make your way up to Lone Pine or Chunuk Bair for the Australian or New Zealand National services. The service at Chunuk Bair starts 45 minutes after the Australian service at Lone Pine. If you’re a New Zealander, you will need to head straight to Chunuk Bair. This afternoon, we return to Istanbul, arriving very late in the evening. Hotel check in and a well-deserved rest, after an emotion-filled day at Gallipoli.

Day 8
Fly Istanbul to Cairo

Sunday 21 Apr 2015. Istanbul - Cairo. Today, make your own way to Cairo where your Egyptian adventure begins. If you provide us with your incoming flight details to Egypt we will be there to meet you at Cairo airport and transfer you to our hotel. Remainder of the day and evening at leisure.

Note: The flight from Istanbul to Cairo is not included in the cost of this tour.

Day 9
The Pyramids of Giza

Cairo - Aswan. A big day out. First to the Giza Plateau to see the pyramids and the iconic Sphinx. Then we travel on to Saqqara, an ancient necropolis of sand-strewn tombs and home to the great step pyramid. Zhoser’s step pyramid was the first ever constructed in 2700 BC by Imhotep, the pharaoh’s chief architect. Later there is opportunity to freshen up before boarding the overnight sleeper train to Aswan.

Day 10
Aswan

Aswan. After arrival into Aswan and hotel check-in we head off to the grand High Dam - an impressive feat of engineering which resulted in the creation of Lake Nasser. Next we enjoy a boat trip to Agilika Island where we visit the Temples of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis. Spend the remainder of the evening at your own leisure; shop in the colourful souqs or simply kick back and relax.

Days 11-12
Felucca Sailing

Aswan - Nile felucca cruise. Optional early morning excursion to the colossal Temple of Abu Simbel by road. This afternoon, we board our Nile felucca for a 2 night voyage on the River Nile downstream, stopping along the way at local villages and islands. If sailing by felucca is not your style, navigate the River Nile on board a 5 star Nile Cruiser with private cabin and en suite bathroom. See our Nile Cruise Upgrade bolt-on for more info.

Day 13
Kom Ombo to Luxor

Kom Ombo - Edfu - Luxor. Disembarking in Kom Ombo we visit the temple before travelling to the Temple of Horus at Edfu, a huge complex that began construction in 237 BC. We then continue to Luxor. Home of the legendary Valley of the Kings and Temple of Karnak, 4000 year-old Luxor is ancient Egypt at its best. Enjoy some rest and relaxation. Tonight, an optional visit to the Temple of Luxor is available alternatively, enjoy the facilities of our hotel.

Day 14
Valley of the Kings

Luxor - Cairo. Take flight over ancient Luxor with an optional hot air balloon ride early this morning before exploring the West Bank of the Nile and the legendary Valley of the Kings. Marvel at Colossi of Memnon, the massive stone remains of the temple of Amenophis III, and explore the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut and surrounding tombs.

After lunch we visit the Temple of Karnak, a spectacular religious complex built on a gigantic scale, where you get lost wandering around the stone papyrus columns. Tonight we travel by overnight train back to Cairo.

Day 15
Egyptian Museum

Morning arrival into Cairo and hotel check-in. Later, we visit the Egyptian Museum, home to the treasures of King Tutankhamen and his famous solid gold funerary mask. The museum also has a bounty of other treasures and one could spend days wandering the great halls. The rest of the day free to relax, shop and explore. Perhaps head to Khan el-Khalili bazaar and pick up a few souvenirs.

Feluccas are simple, traditional Egyptian sailboats that have plied the Nile since ancient times. Feluccas carry between 8 - 12 passengers comfortably. The boat’s deck is draped with soft colourful cushions that serve as your lounging area during the day and as your sleeping area at night. A support boat travels alongside your felucca and is on hand if you need to use the toilet or wash. It is also where your meals are prepared and eaten. You'll need to bring a sleeping bag/sheet and a towel with you. The crew, as well as being experienced sailors, are responsible for the preparation of the included meals, though they welcome helpers!

Due to capacity restraints we do not offer single rooms on the Turkey component of this ANZAC tour. We will match up all single travelers with another fellow passenger of the same sex. We can also do this in Egypt, should you choose. Alternatively it is possible to book a single room for the Egypt component of your holiday and the single supplement detailed below can be added to the 'Twin/Double' price, allowing for the comfort of single room from days 8 - 16.
