Nicknamed the Pearl of Africa, Uganda is a small country of striking beauty and spectacular landscapes, from the semi-desert region in the north, to the lush green areas along the northern shores of Lake Victoria, and snow-capped peaks of the Ruwenzori Mountains in the west. Explore the capital city of Kampala, relax by beautiful Lake Bunyonyi, take an incredible jounrey deep into the heart of the African jungle in search of the mighty mountain gorilla, and go bungee jumping in Jinja. Here is our pick of the best places to visit in Uganda.
The political and economic heart of Uganda, this fast-moving capital city has undergone a dramatic transformation over the last three decades, as the age-worn buildings are being replaced by modern developments cropping up across the city. As a university city, Kampala boasts a youthful and entrepreneurial population, keen to improve their country. Here you can explore the city’s many museums, sample its famous nightlife and casinos, or visit the shores of Lake Victoria just outside the city.
Go in search of the rare mountain gorilla on a trek from Lake Bunyonyi, hiking through Uganda’s cultivated lands and dense rainforest. Park rangers monitor the gorillas’ movements so we have a good idea of where to find them, but it is important to remember they are free-roaming, wild creatures. Once you spot one of these majestic mammals, you can watch their activities, learn about their family, and snap a few photos.
The adrenaline capital of Uganda, Jinla is heaven for the adventurous traveller. Located at the source of the Nile and set on the shores of Lake Victoria, Jinla is the perfect location for white water rafting, quad biking, and for the fearless, bungee jumping at the Bujagali Falls. After you’ve had your adrenaline fix, explore the town, do some shopping at the market, and try out some local cuisine at one of its many restaurants.
The deepest crater lake in Africa, Lake Bunyonyi is home to a large and varied number of beautiful birds, and is the base from which our optional gorilla treks take place. Dotted with islands and surrounded by spectacular scenery, Lake Bunyonyi is the perfect place to unwind and relax before your gorilla trek. For the active among you, why not opt for a swim in its tranquil waters, or try your hand at canoeing. Those with a keen eye can try and see how many varieties of bird they can spot!
