Day 1: Zanzibar
An early morning departure takes you to the Dar es Salaam waterfront where you will board a ferry to the sunny island of Zanzibar. On this two-hour journey you can sit back, relax and enjoy sea views while keeping an eye out for the dolphins that often swim alongside the ferry. Upon arrival in Zanzibar your first stop will be in charming Stone Town, where you can stroll down cobbled alleyways, past beautiful Arabic-style mansions and through colourful market places. Here visit the 19th century Anglican Cathedral, built on the site of the old slave market, before continuing on to the Zanzibar Museum, which contains interesting relics and artefacts from the sultanate era.

Next enjoy a short drive taking in the charmingly weathered High Court and African House Hotel – which has an interesting history dating back some 150 years, before heading to the Old Arab Fort. This massive bastioned structure dates back to the beginning of the 18th century, and today is used to house the Zanzibar Cultural Centre with an open-air theatre hosting music and dance performances. From here head back into Stone Town on foot, passing by the historic Roman Catholic Church. Later stop by the monumental House of Wonders, one of the largest structures on the island and home to the Zanzibar National Museum of History & Culture, before continuing on to the Sultan’s Palace Museum – displaying artefacts from the island’s sultanate era, and the beautiful four-storey Ithnasheri Dispensary, set on the seafront in Stone Town.

Following lunch at one of the island’s finest restaurants, head into the countryside for a spice tour. Here you will see, smell and taste a variety of spices and tropical fruits while also learning about some of Zanzibar’s indigenous plant species. Later visit the ruins of the 19th century Kidichi Persian Baths and the once-impressive Maruhubi Palace, before carrying on to the former home of legendary explorer Dr David Livingstone. At the end of your tour transfer to Zanzibar Airport for your flight back to Dar es Salaam, where you will be met upon arrival and driven back to your hotel or designated end point. (L)
