First stop this morning is at the National Museum of Dar es Salaam, which offers a wonderful introduction to the history and culture of Tanzania. A series of exhibits depict life throughout the country’s colonial period, rebellions and the final independence through objects, documents and photographs. There are also numerous ethnographic displays with examples of traditional dress and crafts, as well as hunting and gathering items. After browsing the exhibits enjoy a stroll through the museum garden, which has a few resident peacocks and a moving memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives in the bombing of the American Embassy in 1998.

Next head to the Makumbusho Village Museum, where you can gain deeper insight into the traditions and customs that are unique to Tanzania. This large open-air site is made up of a collection of traditional huts built in different styles, each one representing a different ethnic tribe found in this diverse country. Walking through the homes you can find artisans crafting various crafts, see examples of traditional furnishing, engage in cultural activities, and on some nights enjoy local dance performances.

End the afternoon with some retail therapy at the waterfront Slipway shopping and leisure centre. Here you can browse western-style shops, people watch, or have a drink or two while enjoying wonderful views of the Indian Ocean. This is also a great place to pick up a tingatinga painting, a style of artwork unique to Tanzania.
