Southern Namibia - 9 days

Southern Namibia, a destination with a difference. Rather than huge herds of game it is more renowned for its magnificent scenery, vast landscapes and a peace and tranquility that comes with an area of few inhabitants. Taking in Fish River Canyon, Sossuslvlei and the beautiful Namib desert home to the world's largest dune, Swakopmund, a coastal resort town offering some down time and more. This holiday is for those that want to see a different side of Africa.

Day 2: Keetmanshoop
Today you set off on your Namibian adventure. Heading south drive along the Auob River and visit the Kokerboom Forest (quiver tree), these extrordinary looking trees are used by the Bushmen (San) of the region to make quivers for their poisoned arrows. Then it's onwards to Keetmanshoop, a quaint German town originally founded in 1866. Overnight - Keetmanshoop (B)

Day 3: Fish River Canyon
One of the most famous and extraordinary sights to behold in Southern Namibia is the Fish River Canyon. Considered to be second in size only to the Grand Canyon, it reaches a depth in parts of 550m and is approximately 160 kilometres in length. During the drier months the river is reduced to a mere trickle if not completely dry, in the wet months it can rise to a raging torrent. This afternoon you arrive in Luderitz. Overnight - Fish River Canyon (B)
Day 4: Luderitz
Luderitz is a hidden gem on the South-West coast of Namibia, having one of the best harbours on one of the most inhospitable coasts. Founded in 1883 and experiencing a diamond boom in 1909 in nearby Kolmanskop it flourished briefly before the diamond mine shut down, Kolmanskop is now a truly eerie experience having been reduced to a ghost town, fighting a constant battle as the desert tries to reclaim it. Luderitz itself is a charming town seemingly frozen in the early 20th Century as little development occured after the collapse of the diamond industry. The main industry is now fishing resulting in many fine seafood restaurants lining the small harbour. Overnight - Luderitz (B)

Day 5: Aus
Arriving in Aus, a small town located in the Aus Mountains above the Namib Desert, considered to be the world's oldest and most beautiful desert. Aus was once the site of a prisoner of war camp for German soldiers during World War I, the camp was closed during 1919 and the town went back to relative obscurity. Overnight - Aus (B)
Day 6: Sossusvlei
Today visit the awesome Namib Naukluft National Park - home of the striking red and apricot-coloured dunes at Sossusvlei. With spines whipped so sharply and perfectly into place by the wind, you’ll want to race (or stagger..) up the famed Dune 45, reputedly one of the highest dunes in the world. Afterwards visit the eerie Dead Vlei, an area of trees that died centuries ago, but due to there being so little moisture for normal composition to occur, they are perfectly preserved, seemingly frozen in time. Today enjoy a 4x4 excursion through the region. Overnight - Sossusvlei (B)
Out on a 4x4 by the dunes at Sossusvlei
Days 7 - 8: Swakopmund
Enjoy two days of leisure in the resort town of Swakopmund. There is plenty to fill your time here from extreme sports, water sports, more desert exploration or for something different a round of golf at the Rossmund Desert Golf Course located just outside the city - one of only 5 all grass desert golf courses in the world! Overnight - Swakopmund (B:2)
Day 9: Windhoek
After breakfast return to Namibia's Capital - Windhoek for your onward transfer to the airport. Tour arrangements come to an end. (B)
