Welcome to Africa and the start of your holiday! You will be met at 10:30am at the Airport Grand Hotel and Conference Hotel and transferred to the Protea Hotel Fire and Ice. The remainder of the day is at your leisure.
The Sterkfontein Caves discovered in 1896, are regarded as one of the world's most important archaeological sites. The caves lie in the Sterkfontein Valley which, together with the nearby sites of Swartkrans, Drimolen and Kromdraai, make up the recently proclaimed World Heritage Site known as the "Cradle of Humankind". Start at the 260m² exhibition, which consists of four large show cases which include life like models of hominids, cave formations and early life forms. Make your way underground into the depths of the caves where you can see some of the most important fossils ever found, continue past the fossil prep where scientists continue to investigate the clues to our past.
Today you will be transferred to Madikwe Game Reserve, one of South Africa’s newer and prime safari destinations. Madikwe is a large, malaria free Big Five game reserve, just 4 hours drive from Johannesburg. Regarded as one of the finest conservation areas in Africa, its vast plains of open grasslands and woodlands, cover some 750 square kilometres and its rich diversity of vegetation ensures a wide range of game, with 66 large mammal species and over 300 species of birds. It has the Big 5 as well as cheetah and wild dog, hyena, sable, eland, gemsbok and giraffe.
The Madikwe River Lodge is a luxury safari lodge ideally positioned on the Groot Marico River overlooking dense bushveld. Over the next 4 days enjoy morning and afternoon game drives. During the day relax and enjoy the hotel facilities, bush walks are also available.
After breakfast you will be transferred back to Johannesburg to start your World in One Country group tour. We hope you have enjoyed the first part of your African Adventure!
