As one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the legendary falls and rising mist of ‘the smoke that thunders’ are certainly a sight to behold. While Victoria Falls is not the highest or the widest falls in the world, it is thought to be the largest singular sheet of falling water and is certainly unique. Located between Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Zambezi River widens to 1.7 kilometres and then the full width of the river plunges 108 metres down into the Zambezi Gorge. The incredible force of the tumbling water sends clouds of spray up to 500 metres into the air, sustaining the lush rainforest that surrounds it. The best way to appreciate the sheer size of this stunning falls is from above, either by helicopter – or if you are feeling brave, on a microlight flight. Adrenaline seekers can also try white-water rafting, canoeing, jet boating or even bungee jumping on either side of the falls.
