A convenient resting point between the Ngorongoro crater and surrounding highlands and Lake Manyara, Karatu is a vibrant little town, which deserves to be more than just a stop over on your itinerary. Presided over by the extinct volcano Ol Deani, the landscape of Karatu is lush with verdant vegetation. This beautiful scenery is accompanied by a pleasantly cool climate, due to the altitude of the town, and some breathtaking vistas of the highlands. With its delightful hustle and bustle and authentic vibe, there is no better place to use as a platform for exploring the Ngorongoro Crater.
Within the town there are a surprising number of different things that visitors can see and do to fill their time there. Firstly, walking around the town will allow you to stumble across all sorts of interesting places including the marketplace, which is stocked up with spices, vegetables and wooden carvings. One of the numerous brick making sites might come in to view as well. Brick making is an important industry in Karatu and the process is fascinating to observe.
Further exploration of Karatu will take travellers to the local brewery, where they will be able to witness the production of local beer and even taste some if they are feeling particularly bold. If the idea of warm beer doesn't seem that appealing then a trip to a cafe to sample some of the local coffee might be a better option. While Tanzanian coffee doesn't enjoy quite the same level of international fame as its Kenyan neighbour does, it is still worth tasting.
