Today we spend a full day in the Khwai area. Enjoy an early morning game drive and sunset game drive, spotting a variety of game that frequent this region that borders Moremi and Chobe. Khwai is renowned for its large concentrations of mammals and it is not unusual to see many types of wildlife during just one game drive, including elephant, buffalo, cheetah, lion, leopard and wild dog. Birdlife can also be viewed in abundance with exceptional sightings of wildfowl and raptors.
After breakfast we head on to Nata Lodge, which is close to the Makgadikgadi Pans. En route we will stop at the Nata Bird Sanctuary. The Nata River delta feeds the Sua Pan in the Nata Sanctuary and forms the breeding ground for a host of water birds including pelicans and flamingo in their thousands, transforming the shore line into a pink haze blending into the western sky. With a little luck you will witness this wonderful spectacle today.
You will have a 3 hour tour through the Pan. Makgadikgadi is technically not a single pan but many pans with sandy desert in between, surrounded by the Kalahari desert. Thought to once be a massive lake covering 60-80,000 sq. kms that existed 2 million years ago and started to dry up 1500 years ago due to climatic changes. Further evaporation turned the lake into large pans with a surface glistening with salt.
We will transfer you to Maun and take the flight to Pom Pom Camp. Pom Pom Camp has game drives, mokoro and fishing excursions, as well as bush walks on offer. The Okavango Delta is one of the last remaining unspoiled wilderness areas of Africa. The Delta is fed by the floodwaters of Central Africa and covers an area of some 16000 square kilometers. These waters fan out into the Okavango Delta forming a wetland system of beautiful palm-fringed channels, lagoons and islands that support a wealth of fauna and flora alike.
