ANZAC on the Western Front - 4 days


Leaving London, head by coach to Ypres in Belgium for an ANZAC Day with a difference. Visit sobering cemeteries and famous battlefields as well as witnessing the Dawn Service in ANZAC morning and the famous Last Post in Ypres.

Day 1: London
Thursday 24 April 2014. An early start this morning as we board the coach in London and travel to Dover for our morning ferry crossing to France. Once in France, we head down to The Somme where many of the ANZACs fought and lost their lives during World War 1.

We have a local historian guides on board our coaches while we visit the various sites in and around the Somme area including The Australian Memorial Villers-Bretonneux and Caterpillar Valley which is the main New Zealand site in the Somme.

Later this afternoon, we head over to our accommodation in Ypres for check in, followed by free time this evening. Overnight - Ypres

Day 2: ANZAC Day on the Western Front
Up early this morning [approx 5am] for the ANZAC Dawn Service at Buttes Polygon Wood. After the Dawn Service we head back for breakfast with the dignitaries before joining the NZ and Australian Embassy officials at our respective country's ANZAC Memorial services. Later this morning we join together again for the march to the Menin Gate for the combined ANZAC service.

After a break for lunch in beautiful Ypres, we meet for another afternoon touring this historic region with our local historian guides. We visit Essex Farm cemetery where there is a memorial to John McCrae who wrote the well known poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, plus a visit to a German cemetery for a different perspective.

Later this afternoon we head back to Ypres, where you can attend the Last Post service at the Menin Gate Memorial at 8pm. This evening is at leisure. Overnight - Ypres (B)

Day 3: Battlefields of Belgium
After breakfast we board our coach with our local historian guides on a tour around Messines, Ypres and the Passchendaele area of the Western Front to see the many cemeteries, battlefields and memorial sites. We visit sites such as Tyne Cot Cemetery and Visitors Centre (the largest Commonwealth Cemetery in the world with almost 12,000 buried heroes), Hill 60, the Memorial Museum of Passchendaele with its excellent interactive Bunker and trench warfare exhibits, and many more.

This afternoon we take a guided walking tour with a local historian guide ‘in the footsteps of the ANZACs’ at Messines [New Zealand] and Passchendaele [Australia]. This evening is at leisure. Overnight - Ypres (B)
Day 4: London
Sunday 27 April 2014. This morning, we have free time to relax or take in some last minute shopping in Ypres. Early afternoon, our coach departs Ypres and we board the ferry again at Calais to make our way back to London, arriving in the evening. (B)
