You can also take guided walks, go fishing with the locals and learn more about the ecology of the area.
Described as 'the jewel of the Kalahari', the Okavango Delta is a huge expanse of water in northern Botswana, which has travelled from the Angolan highlands, spreading out to form the largest inland river delta in the world. Studded with islands and reed banks, the Delta is renowned for its incredible variety of birdlife and animals including elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, hippo and crocodile. The best way to see the delta is by mokoro (a dugout canoe). The swamps and surrounding area can be navigated in a 4 x 4.
Overnight: Pom Pom Camp | Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
On the morning of day 3 you fly to Gunn's Camp, a wonderful luxury vintage safari camp overlooking legendary Chiefs Island on the border with Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta. Spend two nights here and further explore the delta by mokoro, enjoy guided bush walks, go fishing with the locals and learn more about the ecology of the area.
Moremi Game Reserve covers some 4871 square km (70% of which part of the Okavango Delta) and is considered obe of the most beautiful wildlife reserves in Africa, as it combines mopane woodland and acacia forests, lily covered wetlands, flood plains and lagoons. Moremi consists of a network of waterways surrounding two large islands - Chiefs Island in the west and Mopane Tongue in the east. In this pristine wilderness area birdlife is prolific and as Moremi is a fenced reserve, game viewing is impressive throughout the year. Elephants are numerous, as well as buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, hyena, jackal and antelope.
Overnight: Gunn's Camp | Breakfast x 2, Lunch x 2, Dinner x 2
Leaving the delta behind fly to Maun Airport where you will then take a road transfer to Meno A Kwena Camp in the Makgadigadi Pans where you'll spend the next two nights. Situated on the western boundary of the national park, this traditional old-style safari camp has breathtaking views over the park and down to the Toteti River where wildlife regularly come to drink.
The Kalahari Salt Pans in Makgadigadi & Naxi Pan National Park are all that remain of an ancient great central Botswana lake that covered the Kalahari several million years ago. In the dry season the never ending ethereal lunar landscape of glistening salt pans is spectacular, the plains are barren and animals gather to drink at the deep pools of water, which are all that remains of the dries up Boteti River. When the rains come grasslands flourish and the pans fill up with water becoming great sheets of water, attracting a fantastic array of waterbirds and triggering spectacular migrations of wildebeest and zebra.
Overnight: Meno A Kwena | Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Early this morning you head over to Ntwetwe Pans for a guided excursion and a visit to habituated meerkats. Ntwetwe Pan is the western twin of Sua Pan and is of a similar size and topography. One finger extends to the north of the road, while to the southwest the pan breaks up into several smaller pans, including Lake Xau. The old north–south trading route between Gweta and Mopipi crosses the centre of the pan, and the two famous isolated baobabs (Green's Baobab and Chapman's Baobab) that marked this route for early European explorers, including Livingstone who left his initials here, still serve as important landmarks. This afternoon is at leisure. Spend day 7 enjoying safari activities and exploring the park grounds.
Overnight: Meno A Kwena | Breakfast x 2, Lunch x 2, Dinner x 2
After breakfast transfer to Gweta for the short flight back to Maun where arrangements end.
