Beijing: Great Wall - 1 day

Probably the world’s most famous wall and most definitely the longest, it is common belief that it was built to keep the Moguls out, but the crafty rules also used it to keep the tax-paying residents within! Come, climb and witness the view from this magnificent ancient structure!

All our day tours are guaranteed to depart when bookings are made more than 96 hours prior to departure.

If it is winter, rug up warm as first thing this morning you leave to climb the UNESCO listed Great Wall. Synonymous with China and mythically proclaimed as the only man-made structure to be seen from space, a visit here is a must! Constructed as a series of walls as early as the 7th Century BC, they were later to joined together to form the unified structure which we know today, as the ‘The Great Wall of China’. At one time perhaps nearly 9700km long, the wall is now partially ruinous and stretches some 6700kms.

Hungry after the climb, stop for lunch at a local restaurant where there is a chance to try local favourites of pork, duck or dumplings. Later visit a Cloisonne Workshop to observe the beautiful and ancient Chinese art of combining copper and enamel. Originally bought from Europe in the 1300’s and then handed down from the Ming Dynasty, this intricate art-form requires a high level of skill with to create the stunning pieces requires a high level of skill. Originally, the colour used was typically a sapphire blue, the choice has now widened with modern techniques, with striking results. (L)
