A Giant Panda in China
Start the day at the Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center where you can get up close and personal with the rare giant panda – considered to be one of the most endangered species in the world, with fewer than 1500 thought to be remaining in the wild. Dating back to 1993, the centre comprises of a team of researchers and experts dedicated to ensuring the survival of the creatures through breeding, research and education. Spread over 92 acres the centre has been designed to replicate the natural habitat and diet of the species with clumps of bamboo, vibrant flowers, and a stunning hill scene. More than 20 species of rare animals, including lesser pandas, white storks and black-necked cranes, can also be spotted living within the centre's verdant grounds. Visit the Panda nursery for an up close view of the centre’s infant population, or for an extra fee cuddle with one of the giant creatures and snap a photo or two.

Take a break for lunch before moving on to Jinli Ancient Street, one of the oldest commercial streets in China and a charming reminder of country’s customs and folklore. Originally built during the Qing Dynasty the narrow street features old teahouses and craft shops, where you can try delicious local food or buy handmade clay figurines and Shu embroidery.

After exploring Jinli Ancient Street you will then head to the Kuan-zhai Lane, literally translated as ‘Wide and Narrow Alleys’. Also known as China’s Lane the protected historical and cultural area is made up of old architectural structures juxtaposed with modern shops and restaurants. End the day with a stroll through the People’s Park, where locals go to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown. Bonsai gardens, beautiful lakes, historical monuments and traditional tea houses make up the park, and it is a perfect place to people watch.
