Day 1: Guangzhou
Start the day with a visit to the urban park of Yuexiu in bustling downtown Guangzhou. The vast park’s beautifully landscaped gardens are scattered with cultural relics and historical monuments, including the red-walled Zhenhai Tower, set atop a hill in the centre of the park, and the impressive Five Rams Sculpture, one of the city’s most famous monuments. The park is also the site of the ancient Ming Dynasty City Wall, and the Square Cannon Site. Pass the time by strolling under shaded pathways, crossing the arch bridges connecting the park’s three lakes, and admiring the views of the park’s namesake – the seven hills of Yuexiu Mountain.

Next we head to the ancient tomb of Zhao Mo, the second king of the Nanyue Kingdom. Only uncovered in recent decades the 2,000 year-old mausoleum is brimming with fascinating artefacts, and is viewed as one of the most significant archaeological finds in the last century. A silk-jade garment, bronze mirrors and a silver box are just some of the treasures the king was buried with, following the belief that these items would aid him in the afterlife. We then proceed on to Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, set on the southern slopes of Yuexiu Hill. Dating back to the early 1900s, the structure was funded by the people of Guangzhou and overseas Chinese communities as a monument to Dr Sun Yat-Sen, a Chinese revolutionary who paved the way for the Chinese Revolution. The building is now an important representation of the country’s history.

Following a Dim Sum lunch at a local restaurant we move on to the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, one of the four most impressive ancient Buddhist temples in the region, with a lengthy history dating back 1,400 years. Browse the temple’s rich collection of cultural relics and burn your first joss stick to ensure good luck in the coming year. End the day with a visit to Canton Tower (exterior only), the world’s tallest Television tower. Standing at a height of 610m the tower is a major sightseeing attraction in the city.
