Sensational Shanghai - 1 day

Whilst the term ‘bright Pearl’ may be used to describe Shanghai’s old town, come and discover the many other many pearls in Shanghai’s crown – from Jade Buddha’s and futuristic TV towers to well preserved colonial architecture – spend a day delving under Sensational Shanghai’s skin.

All our day tours are guaranteed to depart when bookings are made more than 96 hours prior to departure.

Day 1: Shanghai
A leisurely start, begin with probably Shanghai’s most recognised landmark, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower located in Pudong Park. Its distinctive design is based on a Tan Dynasty poem about a lute and its haunting music, and creates a picture of 'twin dragons playing with pearls'. On a clear day enjoy views of the Bund, Chongqing Island and the Yangtze River.

The Jade Buddha Temple follows. Originally founded in 1882 to house two white jade Buddha’s brought from Burma the year before. Destroyed and then abandoned after the 1911 revolution, the temple buildings were reconstructed on the same site in 1918-28 and now operate as a working monastery of Chan (Zen) Buddhism.

Stopping locally for lunch, spend the afternoon visiting Yuyuan Garden and Shanghai’s old town. Built between 1559 & 1577 by local official for his father, YuYuan Gardens or Garden of Peace and Comfort are the most complete classical garden of its kind in Shanghai. Moving on, through the Old Town – the bright pearl of Shanghai is a fascinating combination of gardens, temples, old architecture, civil culture, business, souvenirs, and food. The Old Town reflects the Shanghai lifestyle – both past and present.
Strolling along The Bund is a chance to experience the city’s vitality and to take in Shanghai, both old and new. Majestic and preserved colonial buildings, once the trading and commercial centre of old Shanghai, sit alongside futuristic developments, chic restaurants, top end shops and bars. We finish with a Cruise along Huangpu River and a chance to view this spectacular city from a different more serene perspective. (L)
