Day 1

Beijing

Welcome to Beijing and the start of your city break! Enjoy an arrival transfer to our hotel.

Day 2

Tiananmen Square

This morning, explore the heart of Beijing including the vast Tiananmen Square where Chairman Mao’s tomb and various monuments to the people are located. Dominating the city’s heart is the Forbidden City, a centre of power for five centuries and seat of the emperors. Entering through the Gate of Heavenly Peace (replete with Chairman Mao’s portrait above the gate), enjoy a guided walk of this old city within a city. Tonight, feast on a traditional Chinese dinner at a city restaurant.

Day 3

The Great Wall

Don some comfortable shoes. Today, drive out of the city to Badaling, where you can walk a section of the Great Wall. Some sections are fairly steep, but the walk on the vast wall that snakes for thousands of kilometres is one of those ‘must do’ experiences! Continuing a short distance from Badaling, we visit the tombs of the Ming emperors. You'll also visit to a cloisonne workshop, where you can see first hand the unique Chinese art of combining copper and enamel to make decorative pieces. There’s a shop if you fancy splashing a little cash.

Free day to enjoy Beijing your way. This evening, take an overnight sleeper train journey to Shanghai.

Day 5

Shanghai

From fishing village to super metropolis, the new Shanghai is perhaps China's Manhattan. Blending old with new, Shanghai is one of planet Earth's most amazing cities. Spend the day at leisure.

Days 6-7

Shanghai

Shanghai is an incredible blend of old and new, Just across the Huangpu River is the new Shanghai, a high-tech development of sky scrapers, the centre piece of which is the rocket-shaped Oriental Pearl TV tower. Mercedes and BMW cars cruise the neon-lit streets, modern department stores rub shoulders with cool bars and Shanghai is staking it’s claim to being China’s foremost metropolis.

On day 6 our sightseeing of Shanghai takes in the awesome Oriental Pearl TV tower, the Jade Buddha Temple, charming Yuyuan Gardens and the Bund and Old City. This evening, enjoy a cruise on the Huangpu River.

Day 7 enjoy time out to explore Shanghai your own way. Xiangyang Market (at the junction of Xiangyang Lu and Huaihai Lu) is the place to head if you’re seeking genuine copy Rolexes, bags, shoes and clobber. Perhaps do drinks, jazz and nibbles at the historic Peace Hotel on the Bund.
