I did the Yin and Yangtze tour, joining from and returning to Hong Kong, where I visited a son on secondment from London. The first thing to mention is that I came as a single traveller, but I need have had no worries. The group comprised both younger and older travellers from several different countries, including half a dozen other solo members, and we all mingled, collaborated and supported each other brilliantly, to an extent that I have not experienced on previous holidays. This aspect made a great holiday even better - so thank you, guys; you know who you are!
Next, I have to say that the organisation and management of the tour were outstanding; everything just clicked, and any minor problems were quickly resolved. Special thanks to our principal tour manager, Stephanie, who was just great. Now and then one did get the feeling that things were somewhat regulated, prescribed or circumscribed to conform to the wishes and notions of the host nation, but given where we were that was perhaps hardly surprising and it did not detract from the enjoyment. There was of course relatively little contact with "ordinary people"; those Chinese with whom we did have contact, in hotels, restaurants, tourist venues, taxis and trains etc, were, I thought, efficient and business-like rather than particularly friendly or personable. Perhaps they have yet to learn to relax in the company of foreigners!
The tour itself, the places we visited and the sights we saw, exceeded expectations. Whether one was in a city, at a famous site/sight or just in the street, on the Yangtze cruise (or an astonishing "peapod" boat!), in a garden or museum, at the Great Wall, on a train or among soaring new skyscrapers and bridges, there was variety aplenty, much to admire and wonder at, so much that was unique, historic, or just different from anything experienced before.
Our accommodations varied, from fair to rather good, but were generally comfortable and spotless; and the food throughout was varied, plentiful and enjoyable. At the end, though, in Shanghai, my remaining companions and I found our way to the French quarter. There we happened upon the 'Boxing Cat Brewery', serving real ales, cocktails and an international variety of food, which, I confess, by that stage came as a welcome change! With a pool table and dart-board for amusement, it felt just like "home". But then Shanghai is a very cosmopolitan city, evidently trying hard to be like Hong Kong, and very much part of modern China.
Overall, this trip really was "on-the-go" and, partly because of a heavy cold that developed in the last few days, I came home exhausted. But I wouldn't have missed any of it. Everyone should go! Thank you, to all in my group and to everyone at On the Go Tours. ”
We are back from our short but awesome trip to China and Harbin.
The tour was organised well for us from beginning to end.
We had a terrific overall guiding from Feng who was knowledgeable about China and spoke very good English. She was quick witted, funny, caring and with so much patience able to handle 33 travellers well.
Local guides in Luoyang and Xian were good.
The weather was very very cold as we expected and prepared warm layering clothes were so useful to enjoy outdoor activities. It came down to minus 27C. But I heard that 2yrs ago it was minus 37C!!
Highlights were: Forbidden City, The Great Wall on Xmas day,The Terracotta Army (although not all were exhibited because of repairing season), Summer Palace, Xian cycling of Old City and Harbin Ice and Snow Festival.
Food was great - catering for Asian and Western palate.
Optional tours like Tang Dynasty Show and different dumpling dinner were great. Trips to see Pandas and Siberian Tigers were very interesting.
Hotels became more luxurious towards the end of the tour. Shangrila hotel, where we watched snowflakes falling while having brekkie one morning, all covered with snow! Winter wonderland!
Soft sleeper train was an experience. Because of our group’s large number, we occupied whole carriage to ourselves and youngsters had a ball!
I would recommend this special tour to others.
Thank you for handling our travel to China and hope to use On the Go again in the future. ”
Firstly we do not think that the experience as a whole could have been better so really there are only good things to relate in that regard. The National guides we had, Nicky on the tailor-made tour, and Betty and Tom (not their real names obviously) on the Yin and Yangtze were exemplary and we cannot speak highly enough of their knowledge, attitude, patience, assistance, and thoughtfulness. They were able to change the itinerary depending on traffic etc to ensure we had the maximum time advantage at each attraction. There was never an apparent hurry and everyone's varying needs and wishes were catered for. Speaking to other tourist groups along the way, this was not always their experience.
The tours fully covered all the tourist aspects of China that were advertised on the brochures and were the ones we wanted to experience. The only exception was the cruise terminated above the wall of the Three Gorges Dam due to adverse weather conditions. In hindsight this was probably for the best as we understood that being on the ship in the 5 cavernous locks is noisy and could be smelly with diesel fumes. The next morning Tom had made all the necessary arrangements for a bus tour of the dam wall and associated facilities, so we missed nothing.
We were the oldest couple on the tour but did not have any problems with the pace at all. Our guide, Tom, made himself available to the younger ones to go out in the evening thus enhancing their experience.
Since our return we have recommended "On The Go" to people we know and will continue to do so. We would have no hesitation to take one of your tours again to another exotic destination.
Thank you Kelly for your friendly can do attitude through the planning, advice, and purchase phases of this holiday. We have enjoyed every bit. ”
We would like to thank you and compliment you on your employees who made our first trip to China a very happy and memorable event.
Tony met us at the Shanghai Airport and made sure everything at the hotel was organized before he left.
Tony then collected us and accompanied us to the Fast Train Station in Shanghai and ensured once again that we did not make a wrong turn anywhere before departing for Beijing.
On the train our booked seats did not have any window at all (the only 2 seats in the carriage). Thankfully on request we were allocated seats with a window.
25/8 - Started tour with Betty who really looked after us until Tom met us in Xian and between them made sure we all had a great time. Tom really looked after us showing us how to do noodles on the overnight train.
Thanks again ”
We have just returned from our wonderful Chinese Checkers 11 day tour and would be very happy to recommend this trip – excellent value for money, very comprehensive itinerary enabling us to see so much every day, friendly and entertaining local guides in Tom and ‘Fake Jacky Chan’ who knew so much about their cities, not to mention the On The Go representatives in Justin and Tony who made our arrival and departure from the airports so smooth.
However your greatest asset has to be Feng, our tour leader, nothing was too much trouble, she handled everything so calmly and efficiently, and made sure we all enjoyed the best holiday possible – we were really lucky to have her on board.
Thank you once again, and we look forward to our next ‘On The Go’ experience. ”
Hello, I have just returned home from the "China express" tour from 09/08/13 to 16/08/13 and had a wonderful time. I was travelling with my daughter Kate (5 months pregnant) and I just wanted to let you know the the tour guide Feng was absolutely wonderful. Nothing was too difficult for her and she went above and beyond the call of duty on many occasions. Feng assisted myself and my daughter greatly, it was very hot and humid and her concern for Kate was greatly appreciated. I think she should be recognised as an outstanding tour guide within your company and I will certainly be going on another ONTHEGO tour in the near future.
Well done and thank you very much, ”
I have to say we had an amazing time on the Genghis Khan Trans Mongolian with On the Go. Guides Jin and Nomin were outstanding. It was faultless ! Will definitely book with you again. ”
We would like to thank On the Go for such a brilliant tour. This was our first trip to China and we are so pleased we chose this tour to do. Our tour guide, Feng, was absolutely amazing, she was so helpful and friendly, was very knowledgeable and couldn’t do enough for us, she looked after us so well, she also has a wicked sense of humour and made us feel very relaxed. Our local guides Tom and Jackie were also super and just great guys. The tour was fantastic and we saw so much, we would not have seen the amount we did if we had of tried to do it on our own. Your staff are such an asset to your company and if we travel to China again we will definitely be going with On the Go as long as we get Feng as our guide.
Thanks On the Go, Feng, Tom and Jackie ”
