This morning we embark on a guided sightseeing tour of the nation’s capital. Tiananmen Square is essentially the heart of Beijing and home of the mausoleum of Chairman Mao Tsetung, the Communist father of the Communist People’s Republic and the striking Monument to the People’s Heroes. Heading back a few centuries we then step into the Forbidden City, the walled city of the former Chinese emperors.
Today, we drive beyond Beijing to Badaling, where we can walk a section of the famous Great Wall, built during the Ming Dynasty. Later we visit a cloisonne workshop demonstrating the ancient Chinese art of combining copper and enamel to make decorative pieces. This afternoon we jump aboard the high speed train to Xi'an. Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel.
Xi’an in Shaanxi Province is perhaps most famous for the discovery of Emperor Qin’s Terracotta Warriors. The 2,200 year old warriors comprise more than 7,000 life-sized soldiers which stand battle-ready in excavated pits. Today we tour the site and visit a workshop where replicas are crafted.
Fly to Chongqing, the start point for our exciting Yangtze River cruise. Before boarding the cruise stroll along Chongqing’s People’s Square, in the city centre.
Good morning from the River Yangtze! At 6340km in length, the Yangtze is the 3rd longest river in the world, neatly dividing China into north and south and wending its way through eight very different provinces. The Gorges are a breathtaking sight! The first gorge we pass, Qutangxia Gorge is the shortest and narrowest yet the most impressive.
During our cruise, we’ll also sail through the new ship locks of the impressive Three Gorges Dam construction. Shore excursions to mythical Fengdu - ‘Ghost City’ and Shennong stream, with its unique scenery and four natural gorges. Drift serenely along the stream in open ‘pea pod boats’, looking out upon lush greenery and ancient villages of the Tujia people.
After disembarking from our cruise in Yichang, we fly to Shanghai. Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel, the rest of the day is at your leisure.
Today take a city tour of Shanghai which includes the Oriental Pearl TV Tower located in Pudong Park, the Jade Buddha Temple and Yu Garden. Stroll along The Bund which is a chance to experience the city’s vitality and to take in Shanghai, both old and new. Majestic and preserved colonial buildings, once the trading and commercial centre of old Shanghai, sit alongside futuristic developments, chic restaurants, top end shops and bars. We finish with a Cruise along Huangpu River and a chance to view this spectacular city from a different more serene perspective.
Sadly your tour with us comes to an end today. You will be transferred to the airport in time for your departure flight.
