The Big Buddha

Day 1: Chengdu

Chengdu, home of the Giant Panda and capital of Sichuan province is famed for its outstanding natural beauty, fiery cuisine and China’s first, largest and best known Panda research and breeding centre. Arrive Chengdu airport and transfer to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free for you to spend at leisure.

Day 2: Chengdu - Jiuzhaigou

This morning fly to Jiuzhaigou. Tour the Huanglong Monastery - built during the reign of Ming Emperor Hongwu, it is now a place of worship for the local Tibetan, Han, Qiang and Hui people. Afterwards enjoy a relaxing stroll by the region’s famed calcium travertines. Resembling a terraced field, the travertines flow into a series of multi-coloured, mineral rich ponds.

Day 3: Jiuzhaigou

Today is spent exploring the Jiuzhaigou Scenic Reserve, renowned for its outstanding natural beauty. It is home to densely growing conifers and rare and endangered animal species. Afterwards, visit the Pearl Beach Falls, Nuorilong Falls and Long Lake. The ever flowing cascade of Nuorilong spans an impressive 320 metres - making it the widest waterfall in all of China.

Day 4: Jiuzhaigou - Chengdu

Morning flight returning to Chengdu. An hour’s drive to the north west leads you to the ancient city of Dujiangyan. It was here, in 256 BC that provincial governer Li Bing set up the Dujiangyan Irrigation Scheme, for irrigation and an outer channel for flood control. Tour the dam site, view the Anlan Suspension Bridge and the Dragon Taming Temple.

Day 5: Chengdu

Today we tour Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding a short drive out of town. China’s Giant Pandas are considered the most endangered mammal on the planet. Afterwards, visit the Wuhou Memorial Temple, the Tomb of Wang Jian and Jinli Lu street - part of the old city where open air theatre and Sichuan Opera are performed in the evening.

Day 6: Chengdu - Emei Shan

Driving to Leshan we our morning is spent exploring the the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Dafo (Great Buddha), which is carved into the red sandstone face of Lingyun Hill overlooking the treacherous confluence of the Min, Qingyi and Dadu rivers below it. Arriving at Baoguo, located at the foot of the Mt Emei, we visit the Temple of Baoguo.

Day 7: Emei Shan - Chengdu

This morning we travel by cable car to the top of Mt Emei to tour the magnificent Wannian temple. The oldest structure on the mountain, its contents are stunning: three thousand tiny iron Buddhas surround a life sized enamelled bronze sculpture of Bodhisattva Puxian. Returning to Chengdu the remainder of the day is free.

Day 8: Chengdu - Datong

We will transfer you to the airport in time for your flight to Beijing and transfer you to the train station for the train to Datong. On arrival in Datong we will transfer you to the hotel.

Day 9: Datong

Today, enjoy a full day of guided sightseeing walk around the Yungang Grottoes, some of the first and grandest of Buddhist grottoes containing intricately carved buddhas of all shapes and sizes. Other highlights include Huayan Temple, Nine Dragon Wall and Shanua Temple. The Nine Dragon Wall is a 600-year-old screen made up of glazed tiles with the 50m ceramic wall depicting a fire breathing dragon.

Day 10: Datong

After breakfast today we head out to visit the peculiar wood-structured Hanging Monastery, built on the cliff at the foot of Mt. Hengshan it gives a breath-taking view of Chinese architecture. Because of the numerous pagodas in Datong it has been known as the 'City of Pagodas'. The most elaborate would have to be the Wooden Pagoda in Ying County. This pagoda is over 900 years old and is attractive for its exquisite design and delicate appearance.

Day 11: Datong

After breakfast and hotel check out transfer to the railway station for the day train to Beijing. On arrival into Beijing we will transfer you to the hotel, ready for the start of your Yin & Yangtze group tour.
