Today you will set out to sightsee the nation's capital, starting with Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Tiananmen Square - home to the Monument of the People's Heroes and many important events in Chinese history - most notably the 1989 Student Protests. The Forbidden CIty - so called as it was only visited by people on Imperial business up until 1911 - is a vision in grandeur with yellow roofs, vermilion walls and the innermost sanctum of Beijing. This morning enjoy a visit to the Temple of Heaven and walk in the surrounding parkland where if you want to go nice and early you will get to see many local practicing there Tai Chi and you can join if you like. This afternoon you head over to explore the Summer Palace with its UNESCO listed imperial gardens on Kunming Lake and last stop of the day will be Beihai Park which was first built in the 10th century and is one of China's larges imperial gardens.
Today, we drive to Badaling, where we can walk on a section of the famous Great Wall. A symbol of total Chinese genius, the Great Wall is a cultural icon. At least 20 dynasties were involved in its construction. Stretching some 6700 kilometres, we walk along just a small chunk of this massive masterpiece of human endeavour until you are tired and then drive to your hotel a stone's throw from the wall. Home to the world famous Terracotta Warriors, which were discovered in 1974 by local farmers who were digging for a well. These soldiers are over 2200 years old and no two warriors are the same - it is believed they are a self portrait of the individual soldiers. After an informative look around this battle ready army you'll visit local crafts people who make clay warrior replicas which you can purchase.
We start our day exploring the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and taking a bike ride along the great Old City Wall. Peering from the Old City Wall offers spectacular, if not unique views of the city and residents going about their daily lives. After, we are off to the airport for your flight to Chengdu, where on arrival our local driver will take you to your hotel.
This morning fly to Jiuzhaigou - a region that for centuries has been inhabited by various Tibetan and Qiang people. Tour the Huanglong Monastery - built during the reign of Ming Emperor Hongwu, it is now a place of worship for the local Tibetan, Han, Qiang and Hui people, all of which have different religious beliefs. Afterwards enjoy a relaxing stroll by the region’s famed calcium travertines. Resembling a terraced field, the travertines flow gently into a series of multi-coloured, mineral rich ponds beneath. Onward travel to Jiuzhaigou.
Today is spent exploring the Jiuzhaigou Scenic Reserve. Jiuzhaigou reserve is renowned for its outstanding natural beauty. It’s home to densely growing conifers, broadleaf trees and of rare and endangered animal species. Ancient Chinese legend has it that the goddess Semo accidentally smashed her mirror here and the pieces that fell down the mountain formed beautiful lakes, streams and waterfalls. Afterwards, visits will be made to Pearl Beach Falls, Nuorilong Falls and Long Lake. The ever flowing cascade of Nuorilong spans an impressive 320 metres - making it the widest waterfall in all of China.
This morning we catch a return flight back to Chengdu. After hotel check in formalities, visit the Wuhou Memorial Temple, the Tomb of Wang Jian and Jinli Lu street - part of the old city where open air theatre and Sichuan Opera are performed in the evening.
A short drive out of town takes you to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Here, we spend plenty of time learning about everything Panda and getting up close and personal with some of our furry friends. Returning back to the city in the later afternoon you will be taken to the Kuan Zhai Alley district to see the well preserved old lanes and houses.
Driving to Leshan our morning is spent exploring the the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Dafo (Great Buddha), which is carved into the red sandstone face of Lingyun Hill overlooking the treacherous confluence of the Min, Qingyi and Dadu rivers below it. Driving onward take in the views from Emei Shan (Mt Emei) designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its incredible natural beauty and historical Buddhist sites. Arriving at Baoguo, located at the foot of the Mountain, spend the remainder of the day after hotel check in, exploring this delightful village, easily navigated by foot.
This morning we travel by cable car to the top of Mt Emei to tour the magnificent Wannian temple. The oldest structure on the mountain, its contents are stunning: three thousand tiny iron Buddhas surround a life sized enamelled bronze sculpture of Bodhisattva Puxian (the protector of the mountain) riding a gilt lotus flower astride his great six tusked white elephant. Weighing over 62 tonnes and standing over 7 metres in height the masterpiece had to be bought to the mountain top in pieces.
Today we explore the Temple of Baoguo. Large and serene this impressive temple structure boasts Puxian and Guanyin statues, high roofed Ming style halls and probably most impressive are the figures of the eight immortals carved from stone betraying Baoguo’s Taoist origins. When ready we drive back to Chengdu city.
Our local guide is going to assist with your boarding of the express train today destined for Chongqing. Arriving into Chongqing our local team are on hand to meet you and take you for check in aboard your Yangtze Cruise ship.
At 6340km in length, the Yangtze is the 3rd longest river in the world, neatly dividing China into north and south and wending its way through eight very different provinces. For today and tomorrow, enjoy the journey and excursions offered as part of the cruise passing the Qutangxia Gorge, Wuxia Gorge, which straddles Sichuan and Hubei Provinces. Xiling Gorge and we’ll also sail through the new ship locks of the impressive Three Gorges Dam construction.
Disembarking from our cruise in Yichang at around 11:30 we set off to the airport for your flight to Hangzhou. Arriving here, meet with our local team for the transfer to Tunxi situated at the foot of Yellow Mountain.
This morning we head up on our visit to Huangshan by cable car. Considered the most beautiful mountain in China, Yellow Mountain or Huangshan is one of a range of 72 peaks in the south of Anhui Province. Set amidst rural landscapes and with its slopes clad in pine, the ethereal scenery is nothing short of breathtaking. Spend the day exploring the natural wonders with your expert guide and overnight at the top.
Returning back to earth by cable car today we travel to ancient Suzhou in Jiangsu Province. One of China’s most charming cities, Suzhou’s fame rests on its waterways and canals that are dotted with traditional bridges, houses and UNESCO-listed gardens.
Today our cruise on the Grand Canal exposes Suzhou’s beauty. After, we visit a silk workshop and the Humble Administrator’s Garden before catching the fast train to Shanghai city.
