Luoyang was the capital city for thirteen dynasties, starting from the Xia Dynasty and has a rich, cultural history, with cultural relics throughout the area. With 10 national sites, 75 provincial sites and over 571 municipal sites to be protected as cultural relics with nearly 400,000 items of relics having been unearthed and kept in museums, Luoyang nowadays is more of an industrial area.
The rare ruins of the capitals from the Xia, Shang, Zhou, Han and Wei, Sui and Tang dynasties are named "Assembly of Five Capitals ". Longmen Grottoes is a World Cultural Heritage Site and has over 1000 caves and 100000 statues. The White Horse Temple is the first officially built monastery in China after the introduction of Buddhism and is a tranquil site. In the Mangshan Mountain there remains the largest group of ancient tombs in China and to the north is the Yellow River, the second longest river in China and often referred to as the cradle of Chinese civilisation and the Mother River of the Chinese nation. Other spots of interests are Songshan Mountain, which is the central one of the Five High Mountains of China, a national forest park at the Baiyun Mountain, Longyu Bay and Huaguo Mountain.
During April, the peony comes into full bloom and there is a Luoyang Peony Festival every year. Celebrating the long history of peonies in Luoyang, the city is full of colour and fragrance during this time.
