Today, we embark on a guided tour of the nation’s capital. Tiananmen Square, a patriotic vision of grandeur and the Forbidden city, the walled city of the former Chinese emperors boasting stunning temples, courtyards and reception halls. We take an afternoon rickshaw ride navigating the old back lanes and courtyards of Beijing’s Hutongs. This evening, we enjoy an eye boggling Chinese acrobatic performance. Swinging ropes, juggling hoops, spinning plates and human pyramids are just a few tricks these show stoppers pull out followed by a Welcome Dinner of Peking Duck at a city restaurant.
Today we go by Cable Car and a short walk on the famous Great Wall of China. Said to be seen from space, the enduring symbol of Chinese civilisation and genius is a prize national treasure. After taking time to catch our breath we tour a nearby cloisonne workshop demonstrating the ancient Chinese art of combining copper and enamel to make decorative pieces. Tonight you travel by sleeper train to Xian.
Early morning arrival into Xian and a transfer to your hotel awaits. In Xi'an we we tour the lofty Big Wild Goose Pagoda. The complex of temples, pagoda’s and expansive gardens, constructed during the 7th century. Then have a delicious local dinner and a Tang Dynasty Performance and spend the evening at leisure.
Emperor Qin’s Terracotta Warriors are reputed to be the greatest discovery of the 20th century - 7,000 life-sized clay soldiers stand ready for battle. We visit the archaeological site and the workshop where the replica warriors are crafted.
This morning we go to see Pandas at the Shaanxi Rare Wildlife Rescue and Breeding Centre. The fun starts now as we take a leisurely bicycle ride (solo or tandem) atop the well-preserved Xi’an city wall. At a minimum of 6 metres in width, 9 miles in length - with no steep inclines the wall offers a great vantage point for peeping down upon the city hubbub below. After we visit the Great Mosque, Muslim Quarter and enjoy some free time in the city centre flying to Chongqing and embarking your Yangtze Cruise for the night.
Good morning from the River Yangtze! At 6340km in length, the Yangtze is the 3rd longest river in the world, neatly dividing China into north and south and wending its way through eight very different provinces. The Gorges are a breathtaking sight so sit back and enjoy for today and tomorrow! Whilst cruising, shore excursions are offered at no additional expense to Shibaozhai and Shennong stream, with its unique scenery and four natural gorges. Drift serenely along the stream in small, open ‘pea pod boats’, looking out upon lush greenery, jagged peaks and ancient villages of the Tujia people - one of the local ethnic minorities.
We disembark from our cruise in Yichang late this morning. After lunch we take a high speed train bound for Suzhou. Arriving here 21:20 we transfer you to your hotel.
Today we transfer to Lake Jinji for the annual Dragon Boat Festival. This festival is one of China's most important and dragon boat races will be happening right across the country today. Boats are very brightly decorated in the style of a dragon and are raced by competing teams to the rhythm of drums. Depending on the size of the boat, there may be up to 80 rowers in one boat!
Enjoy a tour of Suzhou today. One of China’s most charming cities, its fame rests on its waterways, and canals that are dotted with traditional bridges, houses and gardens. A cruise on the Grand Canal exposes Suzhou’s beauty. We also take you on a guided visit to the Humble Administrators Garden before travelling by train back to Shanghai.
Once known for its decadent magnetism that attracted fortune-seekers and adventurers, Shanghai looks like a European city in a Chinese setting. A stroll along the famous Shanghai Bund confirms this. Today, we visit the Oriental Pearl TV tower, explore the Jade Buddha Temple, charming Yuyuan Gardens, and the Old City and the French Quarter.
We will transfer you to the airport for the flight to Hong Kong (own flight booked). Welcome to Hong Kong, arriving at the airport, our driver awaits to take you to your hotel. Spend the rest of today at your leisure.
