Day 1: Shanghai

This morning make your way to the railway station in Shanghai where you will board a high-speed train to Hangzhou. Here enjoy guided touring of the famed West Lake and Lingyin Temple. After touring is complete you will take the high speed train back to Shanghai.

Day 2: Shanghai - Yangtze & Three Gorges

This morning we will transfer you to the airport for your flight to Chongqing where you will board your 3 night Yangtze River Cruise. Later this evening dinner will be served on board and the ship sets sail around 10pm.

Day 3: Yangtze & Three Gorges

Day 2 on board the Yangtze River cruise. Enjoy a leisurely morning soaking up the scenery of the Yangtze. In the afternoon there's the option of a shore excursion to Fengdu (Ghost City) and the impressive wooden Shibaozhai pavilion. Later in the evening back on board join the Captain's Welcome Dinner.

Day 4: Yangtze & Three Gorges

During day 3 on board the Yangtze River cruise you will pass the Qutang gorge, the shortest, narrowest, yet most impressive, of the Three Gorges, and later the incredibly beautiful Wu gorge. Disembark for an excursion to Shennong stream by open sampan. Returning to the cruise ship continue through Xiling gorge, the longest of the three.

Day 5: Yangtze & Three Gorges - Xi'an

Your final day on board the Yangtze cruise brings the opportunity to visit the Three Gorges Dam, the grandest hydroelectric project in the world. After lunch and arrival into Yichang, disembark from the cruise ship and transfer to the railway station for your high-speed train to Wuhan. Upon arrival in Wuhan you will transfer to the airport for your flight to Xi'an.

Day 6: Xi'an

Today discover the marvellous Terracotta Warriors archaeological site. Some 7000 warriors stand battle-ready and have done so for the past 2,200 years. A visit to a clay workshop specialising in making replica figurines is also included. The remainder of the evening is at leisure or perhaps you'd like to opt for our Tang Dynasty Dinner and Show (please see Enhance Options page of the quote).

Day 7: Xi'an

First up this morning tour the lofty Big Wild Goose Pagoda. The complex of temples, pagodas and expansive gardens constructed during the 7th century offered refuge and a store house for Chinese Buddhists to translate the very important Buddhist sutras from India. Next enjoy a leisurely bicycle ride (solo or tandem) atop the well-preserved Xi’an city wall. At a minimum of 6 metres in width, 9 miles in length with no steep inclines, the wall offers a great vantage point for peeping down upon the city hubbub below.

Day 8: Xi'an - Beijing

This morning's excursion takes you to the Shaanxi Rare Wildlife Rescue and Breeding Centre, a shelter for ill and injured pandas, one of the world's most endangered mammals. Later we return to Xi'an for your flight to Beijing, China's historic capital. Here you will enjoy a guided visit of the incredible Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square,

Day 9: Beijing

Don some comfortable shoes as today you get the chance to walk a section of the famous Great Wall. Zig zagging some 6000km, ducking and weaving through mountain peaks and lush terrain, the Great Wall is one of those 'must-do experiences'.

Day 10: Beijing - Datong

This morning enjoy a visit to the Summer Palace. Set on beautiful Kunming Lake, the palace grounds containing various temples, gardens, pavilions, bridges and gate-towers are a marvel of landscaping. We'll also visit the Silk Market today where you can practise your bartering skills and shop for souvenirs. Later this evening transfer to the railway station for your overnight sleeper train to Datong.

Day 11: Datong

Arriving into Datong this morning, enjoy a full day of guided sightseeing walk around the Yungang Grottoes, some of the first and grandest of Buddhist grottoes containing intricately carved buddhas of all shapes and sizes. Other highlights include Huayan Temple, Nine Dragon Wall and Shanua Temple. The Nine Dragon Wall is a 600-year-old screen made up of glazed tiles with the 50m ceramic wall depicting a fire breathing dragon.

Day 12: Datong

Today head over to the Hanging Temple and the Wood Pagoda for more sightseeing. The Hanging Temple is a sight to behold, a structure that seriously defies gravity. Constructed on an impossibly precipitous rockface, it literally hugs the cliff. The remainder of the day is at leisure.

Day 13: Datong - Pingyao

This morning we transfer by road to the ancient town of Pingyao. Brilliantly preserved with red lanterns hanging from grey-tiled roofs, the city is incredibly atmospheric and offers a real insight into imperial life in China with many traditional residences and temples. Enjoy a city tour of Pingyao taking in the sights of the ancient city wall, the first bank of China and the famous Mingqing street where many ancient shops and businesses stand.

Day 14: Pingyao - Beijing

Today is a free day for you to independently explore Pingyao. Later this evening we will transfer you to the railway station for your overnight sleeper train back to Beijing.

Day 15: Beijing

Upon your arrival into Beijing this morning you will be collected from the railway station and transferred to the airport in time for your onward departure journey.
