Winding path of the Great Wall

Day 1: Beijing

Today you board your flight to Beijing where, upon arrival we will be there to meet you and transfer you to your hotel.

Day 2: Beijing

This morning, we explore the heart of Beijing including the vast Tiananmen Square where Chairman Mao’s tomb and various monuments to the people are located. Dominating the city’s heart is the Forbidden City, a centre of power for five centuries and seat of the emperors. Entering through the Gate of Heavenly Peace (replete with Chairman Mao’s portrait), we enjoy a guided walk of this old city within a city. In the evening enjoy a traditional Peking Duck banquet!

Day 3: Beijing

Don some comfortable shoes today! We drive out of the city to Badaling, where we can walk a section of the Great Wall. Some sections are fairly steep, but the walk on the vast wall that snakes for thousands of kilometres is one of those ‘must do’ experiences! A short distance from Badaling, we visit the tombs of the Ming emperors before returning to Beijing.

Day 4: Beijing - Datong

Today we enjoy a visit to the Summer Palace with its UNESCO-listed imperial gardens, located on Kunming Lake. Then its on to enjoy a tour through the Hutongs near Baihai Park. 'Hutong' is a Chinese word for 'small alley', and here you'll enjoy a rickshaw ride and then explore the Silk Alley markets. Tonight we board the overnight sleeper train to Datong. Day 5: Datong

Welcome to Datong, we will meet you at the train for your 05:10 am arrival. After hotel check-in and breakfast we head out to explore the Yungang Grottoes, Huayan Temple, The Nine Dragon Wall and The Shanhua Temple. This evening is free time to relax in your own time.

Day 6: Datong - Taiyuan

After breakfast today we head out to visit the peculiar wood structured Hanging Monastery, built on the cliff at the foot of Mt. Hengshan it gives a breath taking view of Chinese architecture. Because of the numerous pagodas in Datong it has been known as the 'City of Pagodas'. The most elaborate would have to be the 900 year old Wooden Pagoda in Ying County with its exquisite design. In the afternoon we will transfer you to Tiayuan and assist you with check in at your hotel.

Day 7: Taiyuan - Xi'an

This morning we transfer you to Pingyao where you can enjoy a guided tour of this ancient city before boarding a sleeper train to Xian from Tiayuan in the evening. (A soft sleeper train is not guaranteed, subject to availability)

Day 8: Xi'an

Arrive Xian early morning, we will meet you and transfer you to your hotel. We visit Huaqing Hot Springs, a scenic spot in the shadow of Li Mountain. Before visiting the Terracotta Warrior archaeological site, we visit a workshop where we see the process used to create the terracotta figurines. In battle formation, the Terracotta Warriors are one of China’s most awesome sights.

Day 9: Xi'an

Today's highlights offer further insight into Xian; we will visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the Muslim Quarter. Encircling the old city is Xian’s medieval City Wall, where we enjoy a hired bike ride. The remainder of your day free time to explore and familiarise yourself with this historic city.

Day 10: Xi'an - Shanghai

Spend today at leisure exploring Xi'an. In the evening board an overnight sleeper train to Shanghai.

Day 11: Shanghai

Welcome to Shanghai! We will be there to meet you from the train and transfer you to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 12: Shanghai

After breakfast we head out to explore the city. Once known for its decadent magnetism that attracted fortune seekers and adventurers, Shanghai looks like a European city in a Chinese setting. Today, we visit the Oriental Pearl TV tower, explore the Jade Buddha Temple, charming Yuyuan Gardens, and the Old City where you can opt to shop on Nanjing Road and also enjoy a short cruise on Huangpu River at night to see the city lights.

Day 13: Shanghai

Today we depart for a day tour to Suzhou by train. One of China’s most charming cities, its fame rests on its waterways, and canals that are dotted with traditional bridges, houses and gardens. Enjoy a cruise on the Grand Canal which exposes Suzhou’s beauty and later, a visit to the Humble Administrator's Garden and Silk Institute before returning to Shanghai.

Day 14: Shanghai

Today we venture out to visit Zhujiajiao, located in a suburb of Shanghai city, Zhujiajiao is an ancient water town well-known throughout the country, with a history of more than 1700 years. Enjoy a relaxing day with guided explanation and free time to wander old narrow lanes, peculiar stone hawsers on the riverside and old residences amongst other highlights.

Day 15: Shanghai - Guilin

Early to rise today! You fly to Guilin after your arrival transfer and check in, your are off to visit The Reed Flute Cave the cave within the cave. There are enchanting stalagmites, stone pillars, stele, stone curtains and stone flowers. Then we continue on to Elephant Trunk Hill Located at the confluence of the Taohua (Peach Blossom) River and the Li River, this Hill is too famous to be missed.

Day 16: Guilin

This morning your Li River cruise departs from downtown Guilin for a full days excursion. The 90 Km Li River cruise is the centerpiece of any trip to northeastern Guangxi Province it is simply breathtaking. Upon arriving into Yangshou we will enjoy a guided exploration of this charming city before heading back to Guilin.

Day 17: Guilin

This morning we will transfer you to the airport for your flight to Vientiane.
