Day 1: Beijing - Urumqi
Today you will be met at your hotel and transferred to the airport for your flight to Urumqi (CZ 6904 Y 27MAR PEKURC HK2 0835 1240). It is the capital of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, a largely desert and grassland province fringed by some of the highest mountains in the world, Urumqi sits amidst beautiful scenery. On arrival you will be transferred to your hotel. You have the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 2: Urumqi - Kashgar
Today we will visit Heaven Lake, also known as Tian Chi. The lake is small, deep-blue and surrounded by hills and beautiful scenery. This afternoon you will be transferred back to Umruqi for your flight to Kashgar.
Day 3: Kashgar
Today you have the chance to visit the Sunday markets and bazaars. We will also visit an Uighur family, Abakh Hoja Tomb and Old Kashgar. The Abakh Hoja Tomb is covered in glazed tiles and is an important pilgrimage site as a ruler is said to be buried there. In the old town you will be able to see the diversity of Cental Asia.
Day 4: Kashgar - Turpan
This morning you will take a flight back to Umruqi and then will be transferred on to Turpan, about a two and a half hours drive. Turpan is located on the northern Silk Road in a mountain basin.
Day 5: Turpan
Today you will enjoy a full day touring taking in sights such as Jiaohe Ruins, Karez Underground System and Grape Valley. The Jiaohe ruins is a great desert city to visit and you can walk through the old streets.
Day 6: Turpan - Dunhuang
Today you will be able to see more of Turpan, you will visit the Flaming Mountain, Gao Chang ruins, the District Museum, Emin Minaret, and the exciting central bazaar. This evening you will catch the overnight train to Liuyuan.
Day 7: Dunhuang
This morning on arrival into Liuyuan you will be transferred to Dunhuang and to your hotel. We will visit the Mogao Caves which are a great example of Buddhist art and was an important centre of Buddhist learning. At sunset we will enjoy a ride on camels around the Mingsha hills (to be organised and paid locally).
Day 8: Dunhuang - Xi'an
This morning you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Xian. (CZ 6895 Y 03APR DNHXIY HK2 1020 1240) On arrival into Xian you will be transferred to your hotel.
Day 9: Xi'an
Today we will visit the Terracotta Warriors, in battle formation, the Terracotta Warriors are one of China’s most awesome sights. In town we will also explore the Muslim Quarter and the City Wall which encircles the old city.
Day 10: Xi'an - Shanghai
This morning you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Shanghai. On arrival you will be transferred to your hotel and you have this afternoon at your leisure.
Day 12: Shanghai
Today, full of memories of your exploration of the Silk Road, you will be transferred to the aiport for your onward flight.
