The ancient city of Luoyang was the capital of thirteen dynasties, starting from the Xia dynasty all the way to the Northern Song dynasty in the 10th century. It was once the centre of the Chinese universe and home to over 1,300 Buddhist temples. The city has a rich history with cultural relics throughout the area and nearly 400,000 artefacts kept in museums. Today Luoyang resembles many other modern towns in China but the Old Town retains a maze of narrow, winding streets with old courtyard houses lined with traditional rooftops.

Day 3: Luoyang

More than 100,000 images and statues of Buddha and his disciples were carved into the cliff walls for over a kilometre along the banks of the River Yi, just south of the city, these represent the peak of Buddhist Cave Art. You shall also have the opportunity to visit the White Horse Temple.

Mostly off-limits to cars, the city resembles a movie-set with its buildings almost entirely from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Founded in the 14th century the city displays the evolution of architectural styles and town planning in Imperial China over five centuries yet remains off the radar of most foreign tourists.
