Yichang Holidays

In ancient times, Yichang was the site of many battles, the most famous being the Changbampo and the Yiling Battles and relics of these battles are still in the area. Yichang was the hometown of the poet Qu Yuan and it is believed that the festival of dragon boat racing was to commemorate the anniversary of his death. The festival takes place in June, on the 5th day of the 5th month in the Chinese lunar calendar.

Yichang has been known as the Gateway to the Three Gorges and the Throat between Sichuan and Hubei and is the start or end point for cruises on the Yangtze River. The first dam built on the Yangtze is only 0.5kms from the cruise dock, from which there is a great view of the entrance to the Three Gorges.

Yichang covers over 21,000 kilometres and is an important port and distribution centre of goods, with wharves stretching over 15 kilometres. Although during the Japanese occupation, the economy collapsed, Yichang is now a prosperous city.

The city has a number of parks and the surrounding scenery is beautiful - mountains, waterfalls, caves and stone forests. You can visit the Chinese sturgeon museum, which protects the rare species and the Three Gorges Dam, the biggest water conservation project in the world.
