Chengdu Tailormade Holidays

Capital of Sichuan province, laid-back Chengdu is situated at the western edge of the Sichuan Basin and sheltered from the harsh Siberian winter winds by the Qing Ling mountain range to the north. Thanks to the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project constructed in 256 BC, Chengdu is surrounded by chequer-board fields and well-irrigated plains.

Habitat of China’s great pandas, steeped in history and endowed with natural resources, Chengdu was the place where the bronze culture, an indispensable part of ancient Chinese culture originated; the place where the Southern Silk Road started; and the first place in China to use printed money (from the Northern Song Dynasty around 960AD onwards). On top of all this, Chengdu has also long been the capital of traditional Chinese medicine. The cuisine in the Sichuan region is not half bad, either. Known as Szechuan Chinese cuisine in the West, Sichuan food is renowned for its fiery and rich flavours.

Places of interest in Chengdu include Wenshu Yuan, a temple founded around 700AD; Yong Ling Museum; Dr Fu’s Thatched Cottage – the home of a celebrated 8th century Chinese poet; Qingyang Gong – the city’s main Daoist temple; Sichuan University Museum and of course Chengdu’s Panda Breeding Centre. Located just north of the city, this research base set up in 1987 has successfully bred and raised nearly 30 giant panda cubs, scoring well over the usual captive survival rate. Chengdu is also the inland gateway city to Tibet.
