Liuyuan is a small dusty town that acts as the gateway to Dunhuang, a city famous for its historical culture of China and an important ancient city on the Silk Road in ancient times.
The town was originally named Hongliuyuan when it was just a post station. In 1958 a train station was set up here with links connecting the town to the rest of Gansu and neighbouring provinces. In 1962, the post station was finally founded as a town.
The area surrounding Liuyuan is flat desert plains that finally reach the Gobi desert of Mongolia.
