The attractive colonial town of San Ramon sits at the far western edge of the Valle Central. Enjoying a scenic setting amidst rolling green hills and coffee plantations, the city basks in pleasant temperatures year-round and is a popular stop for those travelling between San Jose and La Fortuna and the Arenal volcano.
Known as the "City of Poets and Presidents", San Ramon is the birthplace of numerous former leaders including ex-president Rodrigo Carazo and the social reformer Jose "Don Pepe" Figueres Ferrer, best known for eradicating the military in 1948. Plaques with stories of the city's most famous figures are dotted around town and for those interested in the history of the region, the Museo de San Ramón displays life-size dioramas depicting colonial Costa Rica. Besides proudly documenting its history, the city retains much of its rich heritage and tradition and is a fascinating example of a close-knit community living at a more tranquil pace of life.
Sat on the main square in the heart of the city is the ash-grey Iglesia de San Ramón. Gothic in style with twin spires standing tall over the leafy Parque Central, the church is worth visiting for its interior Spanish-tile floors and baroque-style altar. Those visiting on a Saturday will get the chance to witness the central square come alive with traders and buyers during the weekly farmer's market where people come here to sell their vegetables, fruit and cattle.
