Cairo: Alexandria on the Med - 1 day

Go underground in Alexandria and explore ancient Roman catacombs; marvel at the scale of the triumphal column of Pompey’s Pillar; and visit the impressive defence fort of Qaitbay on this Egypt Day Tour.

All our day tours are guaranteed to depart when bookings are made more than 96 hours prior to departure.

Day 1: Alexandria
Departing early in the morning drive north towards the Mediterranean coast to the cosmopolitan city of Alexandria, which in its founding days was at the centre of the Ancient World, and at times rivalled the great cities of Athens and Rome. Although today Alexandria is a thriving metropolis you can still find evidence of its prestigious past, as hip cafes and restaurants sit side-by-side with ancient monuments, vibrant souks, and Roman catacombs.

Heading underground explore the ancient Kom al-Shoqafa catacombs. The vast network of staircases, passages and tombs are thought to form the largest Roman burial site in Egypt, and was only unearthed in the beginning of the 20th century when a donkey disappeared under the ground. The next stop is at Pompey’s Pillar, a monolithic red granite column standing 28 metres tall, before driving past the new Library of Alexandria, to the gates of the grand Montaza Palace. Later visit the exterior of the Citadel of Qaitbay, a massive 15th century defence fort built on the northern tip of Pharos Island, before beginning the drive back to Cairo. (L)
