Minya was an significant regional town in ancient times and remains of the villas built for Greek and Egyptian cotton barons can still be seen, albeit somewhat dilapidated, a remnant of the former prosperity of the town. Known as the "Bride of Upper Egypt", Minya was once caught up in a struggle between Islamic militants but nowadays the situation is much more peaceful and the security forces will only want to know where you're staying and to accompany you on any excursions to the surrounding sites.
The bazaars are a hive of activity from late morning until late at night which is at the southern end of town. For a quieter pace, stroll along the Corniche, have a picnic in the park or take a ride in a horse drawn carriage. Apart from this, Minya town does not have that much to see. It’s a good base for exploring in the area.
Minya's is surrounded by archaeological sites, some of the best in Middle Egypt, ranging from rock tombs, ruins, churches, rock-cut temples and a coptic monastery, all within easy reach. The sites are from the Ancient Egypt period, Graeco-Roman, Byzantine and Arab period and all within the Minya area.
