Accommodation in the Himalayas

Nepal's cosmopolitan capital offers a good range of international standard hotels, and a small selection of lovely properties can be found in lakeside Pokhara, which often boast spectacular views. Travelling off the beaten track in Nepal, Tibet and indeed Bhutan, accommodation is limited and simple guesthouses or rustic lodges are often the best available. Whilst in lofty Lhasa standards have improved significantly with the arrival of some charming 4 star properties and the super deluxe St Regis hotel.

No-frills or fancy, historic, quaint or quirky, On The Go Tours offers accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. On all our quotes we will provide you with a clear categorisation of all hotels using our ‘On The Go’ categories below. Accommodation can range from western-style hotels and resorts to charming boutique or heritage properties, mountain lodges and other styles of accommodation unique to the region.

Simple:

Whether it be a basic mountain lodge or simple 2 star, western-style hotel in remote areas where accommodation is limited, this is a no frills option.

Standard:

As comfortable as a western 3 star hotel, usually featuring en suite rooms, with a moderate range of facilities.

Superior:

A good standard of accommodation, usually equating to a western 4 star, with well-appointed en suite rooms and facilities, which more often than not include a swimming pool.

Deluxe:

Luxury, comfort and 5 star facilities, often in beautiful settings - spacious, en suite rooms, restaurants, swimming pool, fitness centre and other amenities, plus excellent service.

Lavish:

Crème de la crème, 5 star plus - exquisitely appointed en suite rooms, restaurant, pool, fitness centre and amenities galore. Sheer opulence!

Pricing Guidelines for Private Holidays in India

Prices can vary considerably for tailor-made travel as the quality of hotels, places visited and time of travel is entirely up to you. In addition, you may choose to have a private guide to escort your right through your holiday in the Himalayas, or simply have the services of local guides at each port of call. Prices also vary by the number of people in your travelling party, as fixed costs like transportation and guiding are shared across each group. For an indication of the sorts of prices to expect for a private holiday in Nepal, Tibet or Bhutan, please have a look at some of the Private Tours featured on our website. These are based on two people travelling in low season, sharing a twin/double room.

Getting around the Himalayas whilst on holiday

Road Travel: Airport transfers and road travel at each port of call will be in chauffeur driven, private vehicles. 4x4 vehicles will be used for rugged terrain.

Air Travel: We recommend covering large distances by internal flights which are normally on scheduled services with local airlines. We also highly recommend taking a scenic flight over the Himalayas for spectacular views of the mighty Mount Everest!

Please note that Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan are still poor, underdeveloped regions and their infrastructure and weather patterns can sometimes lead to delays or cancellations. This may take the form of flight delays due to low cloud in the mountains or foggy conditions in Kathmandu and Lhasa. The road network is quite congested in the cities and suffers from poor maintenance on some routes again causing delays and a rough ride from time to time.
