Departing Delhi early in the morning we begin our drive towards Agra. Upon arrival we head to the monumental Red Fort on the banks of the Yamuna River. Dating back to the 16th century this imposing red sandstone fortress once encompassed the imperial city of the Mughal rulers, and within its fortified walls you can still find evidence of the empire’s grandeur. Enter the fort through one of the four grand gates and discover the enchanting Pearl Mosque and a number of stunning palaces, including the Jahangiri Mahal, Diwan-i-Am, Moti Masjid and Diwan-i-Khas.
Following lunch at a local restaurant we make our way to the legendary Taj Mahal for a guided tour. The spectacular white marble mausoleum was meticulously planned and constructed over a period of 22 years between 1631 an 1648 as a testament of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan’s undying affections of his most beloved wife. This magnificent structure was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and continues to be one of the most universally recognised and admired masterpieces in the world. We leave Agra and begin our drive back to Delhi, arriving in the evening.
