This morning you will head off to Pondicherry enjoying sightseeing in the afternoon. Pondicherry on the Bay of Bengal in the state of Tamil Nadu has a Gallic flavour. Relinquished by the French in 1954, the town became the headquarters of the Union Territory of Pondicherry, administering three other former French enclaves scattered across South India.
In the afternoon you will fly to Kochi. The city of Kochi perfectly reflects the eclecticism of the state of Kerala. Here in historical Kochi, one can see winding streets with mosques, a 16th century Jewish synagogue, 500-year old Portuguese cottages, old churches and a palace built by the Portuguese and later renovated by in the Flemish style by the Dutch. Long famed in the history books, Kochi (formerly known as Cochin) offered refuge to Jews more than 2,500 years ago.
Enjoy a whole day of sightseeing taking in the sights of Kochi. Formerly a princely state, Kochi is also fondly referred to as “The Queen of the Arabian Sea”. A sightseeing tour of the town including the beautiful Parsi Synagogue built in 1568, the Dutch Palace built by the Portuguese in 1555 and St Francis’ Church. This evening you will see the Kathakali dance performance.
An exciting day ahead where you will board a Premium House Boat at Alleppey. A tropical coastal town in a region webbed by canals and fishing areas on the southern coast of the state of Kerala.
Disembark the houseboat at Periyar and tranfer to your hotel. Periyar hosts a population of elephant, sambar deer, wild boar, gaur, striped-necked mongoose, bison, antelope, monkeys and langur.
This morning enjoy a boat ride on Lake Periyar. Birdlife such as the Malabar grey hornbill, purple-headed parakeet, grey jungle fowl and tree pie can be seen. This afternoon you will enjoy nature walk before retiring to your hotel.
This morning we will drive to Kumarakom. Perched sleepily amongst a tangle of lush tropical waterways known as the Keralan backwaters, Kumarakom is technically a cluster of islands on Lake Vembanad.
After breakfast we will take you to Kochi airport for your flight back to Chennai. The evening is yours at leisure.
Embark on a full day of sightseeing of Chennai. The fourth largest city in India and capital of Tamil Nadu State, Chennai has a history spanning 2000 years. During this time, Chennai has played host to missionaries, seafarers, spice traders and cloth merchants. The 16th century saw the arrival of the Portuguese, then the Dutch.
Miss Atherton will be fully escorted to visit Mahabalipuram Shore Temples. The ancient was a flourishing port town of the Pallava rulers of south India, who chiseled in stone a fabulous "open-air museum" of sculpture. Experts say that there were seven pagodas or temples on the shores of Mahabalipuram. All but one were pillaged by the rapacious sea, though there is little underwater evidence that suggest they ever existed.
Today we will take Miss Atherton on a guided tour to Kancheepuram. Well known for its hand woven silk sarees and a majority of workforce in the city is involved in weaving industry. The temple town of Kanchipuram in the state of Tamil Nadu is one of seven sacred cities in India. Of the original 1000 temples, a staggering 200 are left. Overnight Lemon Tree Hotel
