Day 1: Chandigarh

This morning a scenic drive leads us to the stunningly beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site of Halong Bay. Here, embark our traditional wooden junk boat we cruise the emerald waters soaking up the panoramic vista of the thousand or so karst limestone islands that stud the bay. Later opt for a refreshing swim in one of the many sheltered coves before taking row boats to the floating fishing village of Vong Vieng. Tonight, there's a Vietnamese cooking demonstration held on the sun deck before an impressive seafood dinner is served.

Day 2: Chandigarh

Enjoy the day to explore at leisure. There is Silver Street, Silk Street, Comb Street, Paper Street and more. Head out and explore the maze of rambling streets framed by narrow front tube houses and may have a chance to sample the exotic fruits, sizzling noodle dishes and delightfully sticky snacks being offers by the pavement vendors. After time to freshen up a transfer to the station is arranged for you to board our overnight train (4 berth sleeper cabin, basic standard) on the ‘Reunification Express’ railway line to Hue.

Day 3: Chandigarh

Day 4:

Today we commence our exploration of Hanoi by visiting the Ho Chi Minh complex, starting at the President’s Mausoleum. We continue to his humble “house on stilts”, see the French colonial Presidential Palace and the 11th century One-Pillar Pagoda. Afterwards we visit the Temple of Literature, the first Vietnam University dating to 1070. After some time for lunch we visit the Museum of Ethnology. Widely acknowledged as the best in the country, containing an extensive display of life-size structures dedicated to Vietnam’s 54 ethnic minority peoples. Returning to your hotel the remainder of the day is at your leisure.

Day 5:

This morning head to Hoan Kiem Lake which is the very heart of the city. Residents of Hanoi congregate around the lake early each morning to partake in Tai chi, aerobics and other light exercise. Enjoy a Tai Chi lesson with the locals and take a stroll around the lake before tucking into a traditional Vietnamese breakfast (Pho) at a café. After breakfast prepare yourself for a truly unique cooking experience! Vietnamese food is healthy, simple to cook and downright delicious this half day tour includes shopping, preparing, cooking and of course eating what you cooked. Tonight around 9 pm you transfer to the station for the overnight train to
