This morning you will be met at the hotel and transferred to the train station for your train trip to Kalka. On arrival in Kalka you will need to board the toy train bound for the hill station of Shimla. Former ‘summer capital’ of British India, Shimla sprawls along a crescent-shaped ridge at an altitude of over 2100m. The famous main street, ‘The Mall’, lined with stately English homes and the fortress-like former Viceregal Lodge, reinforces Shimla’s quintessential English look. Chandigarh is jointly state capital of both Punjab and Haryana but oddly it is part of neither, being a Union Territory administered by India’s federal government, Chandigarh is best known for its outstanding modern architecture. The Secretariat, High Court and Legislative Assembly Building coupled with various museums and the strange Rock Garden each are fine specimens of modern architecture. Comprising a series of interconnected rocky grottoes, walkways and landscaped waterfalls, the Rock Garden showcases an attraction built entirely from discarded building waste.
