Day 1: Chennai
Welcome to India and the start of your holiday! Arrive Chennai, included transfer to hotel. An afternoon tour of the city includes a vist to Governments buildings, the Museum, Santhome Cathedral Church, Kapaleshwara Temple and Marina Beach. (Please make sure your flight arrives sometime in the morning prior to 10:00am).
Day 2: Chennai
Today, we drive to Tirupati en route visiting Kanchipuram, one of sacred cities in India and the seaside town of Mahabalipuram, famous for its shore temple. The city is also famous for handwoven silk. Sighteeing in Kanchipurma including Ekambareshwar Temple, Kailashanath Temple, Kamakshi Temple, Brihadisvara Temple and we stop to see some local silk weaving. (Driver only). Overnight Tirupati - Ramee Guest Line (Club Room)
Day 3: - Bangalore
We visit the temples of Tirupati this morning before transferring you to the train station for you overnight sleeper train to Bangalore.
Day 4: Bangalore
Early this morning you arrive into Bangalore where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Today, we enjoy a half day sightseeing tour of the city including Tippu's Summer Place (Closed Fridays), Botanical Gardens, Vidhana Soudha and Cubbon Park.
Day 5: Bangalore - Mysore
We drive to Mysore today to enjou a half days sightseeing tour including Mysore Palace, Chamundi Hill and Devraja fruit vegetable market.
Day 8: Coimbatore - Alleppey
You will be picked up early this morning for your train to Kochi, where you will be met and transferred to board a traditional Keralan rice boat for a journey through the backwaters in and around Allapuzha (Alleppey). The boat will cross shallow, palm-fringed lakes and cruise along peaceful canals where copra and cashews are loaded onto local boats. The on-board cook will prepare locally-inspired food. Relax, read and catch some sun as the boat plies it’s route.
Day 10: Alleppey - Periyar NP
Disembarking our rice boat, the journey continues to Periyar which has south India’s most popular wildlife sanctuary and home to sambar wild boar, elephant, bison, antelope, langur and a small tiger population. Enjoy an afternoon boat ride (shared boat) in Periyar National Park to view the wildlife.
Day 11: Periyar NP - Madurai
This morning, the journey continues to Madurai. An important centre for worship and commerce, Madurai has been around since the dawn of civilisation in southern India. A bustling city jam-packed with rickshawallas, pilgrims and traders and resembling a seemingly continuous bazaar crammed to the gunnels with shops, markets and lodgings for tourists and pilgrims. Your afternoon guided sightseeing tour includes the Sri Meenakshi Temple built in 1560, Thirumalai Nayak Palace, Mariamman Theppakulam and the city’s busy bazaars.
Day 12: Madurai - Tanjore
Continuing, you’ll arrive at Tanjore. Also known as Thanjavur, Tanjore is an ancient fortified town, with a glorious history dating back more than 1500 years. Thanjavur was the ancient capital of the Chola kings whose origins date back to the beginning of Christianity. Our half day city tour includes the enormous Brihadishwara Temple. Built by Raja Raja in 1010, the World Heritage protected temple has a dome weighing an estimated 80 tonnes which was hauled into place along an earth ramp in a manner similar to that used for the Egyptian pyramids and the Tanjore Art Gallery.
Day 13: Tanjore - Pondicherry
Driving onto Pondicherry, a former French colony which exudes a Mediterranean aura - whitewashed residences, ornamental gardens and excellent French-Indian restaurants. Many travellers come to visit the popular Sri Aurobindo Ashram, whose spiritual tenets combine yoga and modern science. Enjoy an afternoon sightseeing tour which includes Pondicherry Beach, Sacred Heart Church and Aurobindo Ashram.
Day 14: Pondicherry
Today, we drive from Pondicherry to Chennai airport (roughly 4 hrs). (Please make sure your flight departs sometime after 17:00pm).
