Fatehpur Sikri Holidays

Fatehpur Sikri

Not far from Agra, the UNESCO World Heritage Listed site, Fatehpur Sikri (the City of Victory), located in what is now Uttar Pradesh was built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar and served as the political capital of India's Mughal Empire under his reign, from 1571 until 1585, when it was abandoned, ostensibly due to lack of water. The tremendously atmospheric complex of monuments and temples, all in a uniform architectural style, includes one of the largest mosques in India, the Jama Masjid.

Regarded as Emperor Akbar's crowning architectural legacy, indeed it is a masterpiece in stunning red sandstone. Numerous elaborately carved and constructed palaces, halls, and masjids seemed to have satisfied the emperor’s creative and aesthetic impulses, so typical of the flamboyant style of the Mughals.

Quarried from the same rocky outcrop on which the city is situated, red sandstone makes a strong visual statement. Some of the important buildings in Fatehpur Sikri, both religious and secular buildings include JAMA MASJID (known as Dargah Mosque), which contain elements of Persian and Hindi design and is said to be a copy of the mosque at Mecca - and NAUBAT KHANA near the entry, where important arrivals were announced.
