Later on we take a motorised buggy to the legendary Taj Mahal and witness a magical sunset. Built by Shah Jahan in the 16th century as an enduring memorial to his beloved wife Mumtaz. This morning we travel by road to Kalka where we catch the train to Shimla. On arrival in Shimla you will be met at the station and transferred to your hotel. The largest and most famous of the British hill stations, Shimla is the capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh and remains today a popular resort. Set in the foothills of the Himalayas along a crescent-shaped ridge at an altitude of 2159m, it afforded a resort-like atmosphere for the British, so much so that it became the ‘summer capital’ of British India in 1864.
Today we enjoy full day guided sightseeing tour of the lofty settlement, venturing into the narrow streets, which fall steeply away from the ridge giving way to colourful bazaars and fine views of the surrounding valley and snow-capped peaks.
Today we travel by road to Kasauli. Built by the British during the hey day of the Raj, Kasauli is a charming little town that seems to exist in a time warp, reminiscent of a by-gone era. Its colonial ambience is reinforced by cobbled paths, quaint shops, gabled houses with beautiful facades and scores of neat little gardens and orchards. Mixed forests of chir-pine, Himalayan oak and huge horse chestnuts surround Kasauli. Its narrow roads wind around the hillsides and offer some magnificent views.
