Khimsar Holidays

Khimsar Travel

Khimsar is part of the Nagaur District that is located between Bikaner and Jodhpur and provides an excellent starting point for exploring the District of Naguar. The desert village of Khimsar, with its rugged landscape and miles of sandy desert, offers an interesting insight into the rural life of the desert people and exudes rustic charm. The old city has many mosques, one of which was commissioned by Emperor Akbar. Each year the region hosts the Nagaur Cattle Fair, which attracts thousands of tourists.

Khimsar is renowned for its spectacular fort, with its battle-scarred walls and turrets, nestled on the edge of the great Thar Desert. The initial construction of the Fort began in 1523 AD with the purpose of protecting the Royal Family; it has undergone much renovation over the years, with the addition of a Ladies Wing in the 18th Century, when the Royal family took up residence there. The current owner Thakur Onkar Singh (who is the 17th direct descendant of Rao Karamsi, who built the fort) added a Regal Wing for himself, in the 1940’s. . The palace inside the fort, is painted in vibrant colours and a feast for the eyes with its fountains, courtyards, and gardens. Today, a section of this beautiful fort is one of India’s leading heritage hotels.
