Welcome to India and the start of your eye-opening adventure! Our friendly team will be waiting in the arrivals hall of Chennai Airport and will assist in your catching the domestic connection to the Holy city of Madurai (SG 291, 0830/0955, Economy) Arriving here, we transfer you to your hotel where you can relax for the rest of the day.
Maduari is an important centre for worship and commerce, Madurai has been around since the dawn of civilisation in southern India. A bustling city jam-packed with rickshawallas, pilgrims and traders and resembling a seemingly continuous bazaar crammed to the gunnels. Today enjoy a sightseeing tour. Highlights include the Sri Meenakshi Temple built in 1560 and the city’s busy bazaars. This evening your guide will take you to witness a religious ceremony at a local temple.
Today we have a wonderfully scenic ride into the forests of Kerala. We will leave Madurai and head for Munnar hill station, stopping along the way to get a taste for rural life in some of the quaint villages we pass.
Munnar is a quaint hill station nestled on the verdant slopes of tea plantations, that exudes a rare old world charm and reminds one of the days of the Raj in its elegant splendour. At a height of 1525 metres, Munnar offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. We will head out today with our driver to visit a working Tea Plantation and also stopping to take in the scenery and natural attractions of the region.
Today we have a short drive south to Periyar, South India’s most popular wildlife sanctuary and home to bison, antelopes, sambar, wild boar, birds and even the odd tiger! Arriving at the hotel, check into your rooms and then head out to visit a nearby spice plantation.
Enjoy the day in Periyar National Park. We have pre booked for you a boat safari and walking safari to take in the incredible wildlife.
This morning we head to the coast and board a simply furnished private rice-boat for a journey through the backwaters from Alleppey to Kumarakom. Crewed by a poler to push the rice boat through the water, a distance of some 20 kms will be covered, during which time the boat will glide past colourful local villages. As for dining, the on-board cook will prepare meals using fresh local produce.
After breakfast we disembark and transfer to our hotel here in Kumarakom. Perched sleepily amongst a tangle of lush tropical waterways known as the Keralan backwaters, Kumarakom is technically an island on Lake Vembanad. An ideal place to relax and be at one with natural surroundings.
Enjoy a day relaxing in this gorgeous tropical location. If you did fancy being a bit busy, there is also a wonderful bird sanctuary, winter home to many migratory birds which is worth a visit.
This morning we drive to Kochi. In the afternoon enjoy a sightseeing tour of the town including the beautiful Parsi Synagogue built in 1568, the Dutch Palace built by the Portuguese in 1555 and St Francis’ Church. A walking tour of Fort Cochin takes you through streets still graced with traces of Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial architecture.
Sadly your journey has come to an end, we will transfer you to the airport in time for your flight home.
