Lucknow Travel

Lucknow is the capital of India's most populous state – Uttar Pradesh. Lucknow was the abode of the Nawabs of Avadh, and their regal pastimes and pleasures were legendary. They refined their formal speech, extolling virtues to high exaggeration, were fond of song and dance and nurtured Urdu verse as well as the Kathak school of court dance. The foods from the Royal kitchen were the result of creative experimentation, delicate in taste. And their monuments excelled in the use of arches, pavillions and domes.Lucknow owes a lot of its growth into an elegant city to a great ruler, Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daula, who shifted his capital here from Faizabad in 1775 AD, a patron of the arts and builder of palaces, gardens, mosques and shrines.

Shahnajaf or Najaf-E-Ashraf derives its name from a tomb of Hazrat Ali built in the Iraqi city of Najaf. In 1857, Shahnajaf became the stronghold for freedom fighters. Asafi Imambara was built by Nawab Asaf-Ud-Daula in 1784 as a relief work during the terrible famine that year. Apart from the galleries in the interior, there is no wood work anywhere. The interior vaulted hall measuring 162 feet long, 53 feet broad and 50 feet high is said to be one of the largest apartments of its kind in the world. From the outside, a staircase leads to a series of artfully designed labyrinths where it is very easy to get lost. One could wander through the zigzag narrow galleries for hours without finding ones way out. Most visitors are therefore allowed inside with guides who are familiar with the maize.
