Today, enjoy a half day walking tour of Old Delhi using the Metro train for transportation.
Early morning transfer to the railway station to board the Shatabdi Express train to Amritsar (air-conditioned chair car). You will be met upon arrival and transferred to your hotel. This afternoon travel approximately 28km to Wagah, which is the only border crossing between India and Pakistan. Visiting Wagah is an interesting experience especially at sunset when the ‘Retreat’ ceremony takes place with the BSF on the Indian Side of the Border. The changing of the guards and the ceremonial lowering of the flags ceremony is carried out with great pomp.
This morning enjoy a sightseeing tour of the historic Amritsar, including the Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh. Amritsar’s main attraction - the beautiful Golden Temple, is made of white marble, bronze and gold leaf. The lower half of the Golden Temple is covered with marble and the upper with copper, overlaid with pure gold leaf, thus the name “The Golden Temple”. The Golden Temple has four entrances and the walls are inlaid with semi-precious stones in floral patterns, frescoes and glasswork. The Jallianwala Bagh is a particularly sacred place for all Indians today, as it is associated with a poignant episode in India’s freedom struggle. Besides a thriving industry, Punjab is also known for handicrafts and handlooms. Rest of the day is at leisure.
Free time in the day to do your own thing. Later this afternoon, you will be transferred to the railway station to board your train to Delhi, arriving shortly before midnight. Here, you will be met upon arrival and transferred to your hotel.
Today, we travel by express train to Jhansi and drive onward to Khajuraho visiting Orchha on the way. Situated on the banks of the River Betwa, Orchha is set amongst a wonderful complex of well-preserved 16th century temples and palaces.
Khajuraho - home of the resplendent Hindu temples which were built during the Chandela dynasty over a 100 year burst of creative genius from 950-1050 AD. Immortalised in stone, the carved temples display exceedingly artistic aspects of Indian life a millennium ago. Today, we enjoy a full days Temple touring including teh Western and Eastern Group of Temples.
We bid farewell to Khajuraho and fly east to Varanasi. Perhaps the holiest city in India; Varanasi, also known as Benares or the city of Shiva, is also one of the oldest cities on earth. Sitting on the banks of the holy River Ganges, it has been a centre of learning and civilisation for more than 2000 years and is a place of Hindu pilgrimage.
This morning, we enjoy a sunrise boat ride on the holy Ganges where we’ll view the ancient religious tradition of ritual cleansing that takes place on the many riverbank ghats (riverside steps). Later, we embark on a tour of the city. At sunset we re-visiting the ghats for the evening pilgramage, remarkably different from the dawn ritual.
Today, we enjoy a half day visit to Sarnath including a walking tour to the museums, ruins, Buddhist Temple and Stupas before returning to Varanasi for a afternoon at leisure.
Morning at leisure to explore the holy city on your own before we drive you to the train station for your Intercity Express air conditioned chair car train to Lucknow arriving later in the evening. You will be met in Lucknow and transferred to your hotel.
Enjoy a full day sightseeing tour in Lucknow including Asafi Mosque, Hussainabad Imambara, Lucknow Residency, Dilkhusha Palace, La Martiniere College, Picture Gallery, Clock Tower and Dhobi Ghat on river bank.
Day at leisure with a car and driver available to explore the city within the city limits. This evening we transfer you to the train station for your overnight sleeper train to Mumbai.
Today is spent on the train with you ETA into Mumbai at around 20:05pm tonight. You will be met at the train station and transferred to your hotel.
