Welcome to India and the start of your adventure with On the Go Tours. Upon your arrival at Delhi's international airport our local representative will be waiting in the arrivals hall to greet you and transfer you to your hotel for check in. Remainder of the day at leisure.
Our full day guided sightseeing tour of Delhi today covers the colourful chaos of Old Delhi and the modern simplicity of New Delhi. This vibrant city is full of forts, monuments, temples, mosques and more. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Delhi was important centre of the Mughal dynasty and the British made it the capital city in 1911. We take in Red Fort, Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk, the bustling bazaar, as well as the Raj Ghat and Shanti Vana – the cremation sites of Mahatama Gandhi and Jawahar Lal Nehru. In New Delhi we visit India Gate, Rasthrapati Bhawan, Parliament House and Humayun’s Tomb.
This morning we transfer you to the airport for your flight east to Varanasi, India's holiest city (AI 406 1030/1145 hrs). On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel for check in. Remainder of the afternoon at leisure for you to wander along the ghats. Later this evening attend a traditional Aarti ceremony, a devotional ritual that uses fire as an offering. It's usually made in the form of a lit lamp, and in the case of the Ganges River, a small diya with a candle and flowers that's floated down the river.
This morning enjoy a sunrise boat ride on the holy Ganges where you’ll view the ancient religious tradition of ritual cleansing that takes place on the many riverbank ghats (riverside steps). Later we embark on a tour of the city and Sarnath where Buddha preached his first discourse in the deer park to set in motion the 'Wheel of the Dharma. At sunset consider re-visiting the ghats for the evening pilgrimage, remarkably different to the dawn ritual.
Enjoy a day at leisure in Varanasi. Later this evening we transfer you to the railway station for your overnight sleeper train to Agra (Magadh Express 2217/0630 hrs).
Arriving into Agra this morning you will be met and transferred to your hotel for immediate check in - your room will be available upon arrival. The rest of the day is at leisure to rest after your overnight journey.
Today we visit the magnificent Taj Mahal at sunrise. Enjoy your own time to explore and a guided tour of this once powerful Moghul emperor’s monument to love. Later we visit Agra fort, built under the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1565, which contains numerous palaces and a white marble mosque as well as the Baby Taj. Remainder of the day is free and at your leisure.
This morning we will take a drive out to the ghostly fortified city of Fatehpur Sikri, abandoned only eight years after its construction due to droughts in the area. We continue on through the Rajasthan countryside to the capital of Rajasthan, the Pink City of Jaipur, so named because of the terracotta pink colour of the buildings, painted to welcome the Prince of Wales in 1876.
This morning we visit the delicate pink, magnificent fort-palace of Amber - a wonderful example of Rajput architecture just north of Jaipur. Subject to Government regulations, we will arrive in style riding on an elephant! We then enjoy a city tour including the City Palace, which boasts an interesting museum of regal attire, and Jantar Mantar, an ancient astronomical observatory.
Day at leisure with a car at your disposal to enjoy Jaipur at leisure. Please note that check out time at your hotel is 12 noon. Later this evening we will transfer you to the railway station for your overnight sleeper train to Bikaner (Kota HMH Sup Express 2150/0435).
Arriving into Bikaner this morning you will be met and transferred to your hotel. We have booked your room for early check in so that you can access your room immediately upon your arrival. Remainder of the day at leisure.
Once an important staging post on the great caravan routes, much of the atmospheric old town in Bikaner is still encircled by massive fortified walls. Within these walls are havelis, artisan shops and people going about their daily lives. Today we visit the spectacular Junagarh Fort and museum, built between 1587 and 1593 during the rule of Rai Singh, as well as the camel breeding farm and the Karni Mata Temple, famous for its black rats, which are treated as sacred.
Driving through the Rajasthani Thar desert we arrive at the medieval caravan outpost of Jaisalmer, one of the jewels in India’s crown. Exquisite wood and sandstone buildings dot the town and within Jaisalmer Fort are homes, hotels and shops hidden away in ancient lanes. Hotel check in and the remainder of the day at leisure.
Today enjoy a guided sightseeing tour of the city including the sandstone fort which is an imposing sight, towering magnificently over the city. Later this afternoon we will take you on an exciting camel safari on the Sam sand dunes to watch the sun set.
This morning we drive to Jodhpur, a charming town located on the eastern edge of the Thar Desert. Dubbed the Blue City due to the distinctive colour of its old town houses, the city is dominated by the grand Meherangarh Fort which sits on a hilltop within the ancient walls of the old city. We’ll enjoy an afternoon of sightseeing in this colourful city, taking in the mighty for and bazaars of the old city which are gathered around the city’s tall clock tower. Later enjoy free time to bargain for local wares, from spices to richly coloured textiles and ornaments.
Leaving Jodhpur we drive to Ranakpur, a small town tucked away in a remote valley and famed for its beautiful 14th century Jain temples. We’ll enjoy some exploration here taking in the temples before continuing to Udaipur, a beautiful town set on the shores of picturesque Lake Pichola. A favourite amongst traveller, Udaipur is viewed as one of Rajasthan’s most romantic cities and is brimming with palaces and temples. On arrival check in to your hotel with the remainder of the afternoon at leisure.
This morning will consist of an orientation and sightseeing tour of Udaipur - including the City Palace and museum - before having a few hours in the afternoon to explore for yourselves. This evening you will take ride in a boat on Lake Pichola.
Departing early this morning we transfer you to the airport for your flight to Kochi via Mumbai (9W 2094 0710/0835 hrs // 6E 244 1120/1300 hrs). Upon your arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel for check in with the remainder of the day at leisure.
This morning we journey by road where you’ll board a traditional Keralan rice boat for a journey through the backwaters in and around Allapuzha (Alleppey). The boat will cross shallow, palm-fringed lakes and cruise along peaceful canals where copra and cashews are loaded onto local boats. The on-board cook will prepare locally-inspired food. Relax, read and catch some sun as the boat plies its route.
After breakfast, you'll disembark from the houseboat and be transferred to your hotel in Mararikulam. Located in the southern Indian state of Kerala, Mararikulam is an attractive palm fringed coastal stretch comprising a small village and resort accommodation on the Arabian Sea. Hotel check in and remainder of the day at leisure.
Sit back and relax here in this laid back coastal area of India, walk along palm fringed beaches looking for shells and watching the fishermen at work, or simply kick back and enjoy some fresh fruit cocktails served on a silver platter.
