Munnar Holidays

Munnar Travel

Set amidst dramatic mountain scenery, the hill town of Munnar in the state of Kerala lies at an altitude of 1524 metres, essentially the commercial centre of some of the world’s highest tea-growing estates. It’s easy to see why Scottish planters who first developed this hidden valley in the 1900s felt so at home here. Although not quite like Inverness or the Highlands, the weather was a lot cooler.

Rajophiles will enjoy spotting the many British bungalows that cling to the side of verdant valleys and the famous High Range Club with its manicured lawns and golf course. The Stone Church built in 1910 commemorates the memory of early planters with brass plaques.

Enjoyable walks and indeed bike rides can be had amongst the verdant landscape, which afford breathtaking views of the surrounding and lofty peaks. From many locations in Munnar, one can view Anamudi, which at 2695m is South India’s highest peak. Bikes can be hired in town at various locations. In addition to acres of tea, there is a Tea Museum, which offers lots of information on the actual production of this prime crop.

Just beyond Munnar, lies Eravikulam National Park, where one can spot the rare, and almost tame Nilgiri Tahr (a type of mountain goat), and walk around the Rajamala Hills. To protect the Nilgiri Tahr during calving season, the park is closed for around 6 weeks from mid-January.
