Marianne arrives into Chennai at 13:15 and is transferred to your hotel. A later afternoon tour of the city includes a visit to St George Fort, built in 1653 and St Mary’s Church, the oldest British church in India.
En route to Pondicherry we visit Kanchipuram, one of sacred cities in India and the seaside town of Mahabalipuram, famous for its shore temple. The city is also famous for handwoven silk. In Mahabalipuram, the huge rock-cut sculptures and mandapams (pillared pavilions) date from the 5th to 8th centuries. Arrive Pondicherry in the evening.
Start the day with a sightseeing tour of Pondicherry which includes the enormous Brihadishwara Temple and interesting colonial buildings. Afternoon, enjoy free time to visit the Sri Aurobindo Ashram at your leisure.
Morning rise bright and early we drive to Kaliveli lake which is a seasonal wetland, with a gradient from freshwater to brackish water, and is an important feeding and breeding ground on migratory bird fly way, but it is very much under threat from farming etc. We then drive to Tiruvannamalai stopping en-route to visit some very interesting off the beaten track temples such as those in around Villuparam in particular Thumpoor (Dated at 1450 yrs old) and Gingee Fort. Today we make our way to Bangalore however along the way we have some interesting things to see. Highlights include Rayakottah, a historic hill fort where for the British it was a strategic place where their troops were stationed till 1861, then Thali which is situated in the land of valleys and cliffs. The climate is very cool and pleasant. It experiences cold and cloudy weather resembling England. Hence it is popular with the name 'Little England' since British Regime.
