Day at leisure.
This morning after breakfast we take the cruise boat to visit Elephanta caves - Mumbai's premier tourist attraction. The rock-cut temples on peaceful Elephanta Island are thought to have been carved between 450 and 750 AD. The main cave contains large sculpted panels, including an astonishing 18-foot depiction of Shiva. Enjoy guided touring of the caves and temples with some free time to enjoy the island before returning back to Mumbai.
Today enjoy an excursion to the Kanheri Caves. Located 42km from the northern limits of Mumbai, these Buddhist caves are located in almost pristine forest and contain superb sculptures, connected to one another by steep winding paths.
This morning we depart Mumbai and drive to the city of Nasik (approx. 2.5hrs by car). Upon arrival check in to your hotel before proceeding to the rock-cut caves at Pandav Lena. These caves date back some 2,000 years and display the peak of Buddhist achievement. Head back to Nasik for the evening. Opt to wander along the ghat-lined banks of the Godavari River to see the city fully animated.
Our journey continues to Aurangabad (approx. 3hrs by car). Upon arrival check in to your hotel and time for lunch before heading to the Aurangabad caves, a fascinating crop of rock-cut Buddhist caves overlooking the city. The fine sculpture and panoramic views makes it a worthwhile place to visit.
Today enjoy an excursion to Ellora with its impressive temples and monasteries. Ellora is home to the renowned Kailasa Temple - probably the largest monolith in the world and said to have taken 7000 labourers 150 years to build! Our guide will bring history to life with free time afterwards for you to wander around the site at your leisure.
Enjoy an excursion to Ajanta Caves. Nestling in an inner fold of the Sahyadri hills, 100 kms from the city of Aurangabad in the shape of a mammoth horseshoe are the 30 rock-hewn caves of Ajanta, dating from 2nd century B.C. Discovered in 1819, by a group of British Offcers, these startling achievements took around 600 years to create. Carved with little more than a hammer and chisel, Ajanta, once the retreat of the Buddhist monastic orders features several ‘Chaityas’ and Viharas.
This morning we will transfer you to Pune (approx. 4hrs), one of south India's fastest growing business centres. Hotel check in and time for lunch. This afternoon visit Pataleshwar Temple, a rock-cut temple dating back to the 8th century. Continue to the peaceful Bedsa caves for a look around its chaitya hall and monolithic stupa.
Today we visit the Buddhist caves of Bhaja and Karla. Bhaja is home to 18 caves consisting of simple halls and adjoining cells fronted by rough verandas. The caves at Karla contain the largest and best preserved chaitya hall in India. Here you'll also find a Hindu shrine.
Today marks the end of your incredible journey with On the Go Tours. After breakfast and hotel check out we will transfer you to the airport in time for your included flight to Delhi (G8 174 departing 11:20, arriving Delhi 13:25). Upon arrival into Delhi you will meet your driver you will take you to your designated hotel. End of services.
