The Deer Park in Sarnath is where Buddha spoke of the middle way to Nirvana. 10 kilometres from Varanasi, Sarnath contains a number of Stupas, the first of which was erected by Emperor Ashok and it now is one of the biggest Buddhist ruins. Also on the site are the excavated ruins of monasteries and Ashoka Pillar with its four-sided lions heads. The museum has some of the best examples of Buddhist art. The DhamekhThe Deer Park in Sarnath is where Buddha spoke of Nirvana, in his first sermon called turning of the wheel . 10 kilometres from Varanasi, Sarnath contains a number of Stupas, the first of which was erected by Emperor Ashok and it now is one of the biggest Buddhist ruins. In the 12th century, Sarnath came under attack and the monastery was destroyed and the monks fled. Sarnath was never built up again.

Also on the site are the excavated ruins of monasteries and Ashoka Pillar with its four-sided lions heads., which symbolise the spread of Buddha’s teachings. The museum has some of the best examples of Buddhist art. It also houses the Lion Capital, which once was the crowning glory of the Ashok Pillar, today being the official symbol of the Indian state. The Dhamekha stupa is 33 metres high, dating back to around 500BC and is the most striking sight in Sarnath.

Dharmarajika Stupa is just in front of Ashok Pillat, which marks the spot where Buddha gave his first sermon. The stupa is 143 feet high and dates back to the Gupta period.
