Today we explore both Old and New Delhi. The order of New Delhi is a huge contrast to the unorganised chaos of the Old City but both are just as appealing. Taking in the impressive Red Fort, Jama Masjid - India’s oldest and largest mosque, Raj Ghat - the site of Gandhi’s cremation and more.
Departing Delhi we journey five hours to Agra, once India’s Mughal capital. Upon arrival we visit Agra fort, which boasts some of India’s finest Mughal buildings behind its fortified walls. During its history it has been a palace, a fort and even a prison.
This morning we rise early to witness the iconic Taj Mahal at sunrise. As the growing light changes the colours of this great monument, we explore the numerous rooms and pretty garden grounds. Later in the afternoon we journey to the Pink City of Jaipur. En route we stop to visit the ghostly fortified city of Fatehpur Sikri, abandoned only eight years after its construction due to water drought.
This morning we visit the delicate pink, magnificent fort-palace of Amber - a wonderful example of Rajput architecture just north of Jaipur. Subject to Government regulations, we will arrive in style riding on an elephant. In the afternoon you will enjoy a tour of the city. Highlights include the City Palace, which boasts an interesting museum of regal attire and Jantar Mantar, an ancient astronomical observatory.
After a leisurely breakfast we drive to Shahpura Bagh, a luxury property that provides an authentic home stay experience with the descendents of Shahpura royalty. The property offers a number of nature-based activities including bird watching and nature hikes. Spend the next two days doing as little or as much as you like.
This morning we bid farewell to our newly formed friends at Shahpura Bagh and head to Udaipur. Sitting on the shores of Lake Pichola, Udaipur was once the capital of the Rajput kingdom Mewar, a princely state of British India. After hotel check in the rest of the day is free for you to enjoy at leisure.
This morning will consist of an orientation and sightseeing tour of Udaipur - including the City Palace and museum - before having a few hours in the afternoon to explore for yourselves. This evening you will take a ride in a private boat on Lake Pichola itself.
Say goodbye to two members of the travelling party as they depart at 16:30 for their Jet Airways flight back to Delhi to connect with their international departure flight. In Delhi they will have a car and driver at their disposal. For the remaining two, an 07:15 Jet Airways flight takes us to Kochi via Mumbai. Arriving in the afternoon we'll meet you again at the airport and transfer you to your hotel in the city centre.
Full flexibility, relax and when your ready transfer to Kumarakom at your own ease. Perched sleepily amongst a tangle of lush tropical waterways known as the Keralan backwaters, Kumarakom is technically a cluster of islands on Lake Vembanad.
Today we board a traditional Keralan rice boat for a journey through the backwaters in and around Allapuzha (Alleppey). The boat will cross shallow, palm-fringed lakes and cruise along peaceful canals where copra and cashews are loaded onto local boats. Relax, read and catch some sun as the boat plies its route.
Today our driver takes you to a local elephant orphanage where you will spend the day independently exploring the grounds, getting up close and personal to these gentle giants. Watch the baby elephants play in the water and if you're lucky, help with feeding time.
After a leisurely breakfast we head south down the coast to Kovalam, an internationally renowned beach resort 16km away from Trivandrum. Kovalam offers a number of pretty beaches, which can be pleasantly enjoyed on an evening stroll.
Today we enjoy a full day excursion to Kanyakumari, located at the southernmost tip of India. Here you'll find the 133 feet tall Thiruvalluvar Statue and the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, a sacred monument built in honour of the visit of the great spiritual teacher Swami Vivekananda.
Make the most of the coast as today is a free day to spend at leisure. Explore the beaches or the nearby sea-port of Vizhinjam famous for its special varieties of fish, old Hindu temples, big churches and a mosque.
Today marks the end of your incredible journey in India and after breakfast and hotel check out we transfer you to the international airport at Trivandrum for your onward departure journey, bidding you a fond farewell.
